Looking At College Sports In the Future

Just like our lives sports will look different in the future.
This could really be true for college sports for sure.

So far major colleges like Washington and Washington State
haven't cancelled some of their sports for the future as of yet
while smaller colleges have.

Whether it is the right thing to do or not we will see for
sure as well.

Football and basketball should still be around for most
colleges though for the smaller schools who may have
found football was already not profitable may decide
to hang up the cleats. Basketball doesn't have as much
cost to run the program so it will likely survive, however,
some schools may feel forced to cancel them as well.

Though these sports may still hang on the recruiting of
players may look different in the future. Actually they
may look like what has been going on over the last few
months.

It wouldn't surprise me if coaches will spend more time
with perspective athletes  on line or video conferencing.
The top players they feel to still get into their program
they may get back to traveling to meet in person.

How we see sports on television could change as well.
The networks may decide to use less cameras and they
may not go with a sideline reporter either.

Only time will tell for the answers. Sport stadiums may
no longer be filled to capacity for a while either beyond
this coming season.

There is a good chance no fans in the stands or at least
limited fans anyway. Fans could decide stayng home
watching games on television may be the best avenue.

We have to remember fans are in the same predicament
as schools and sport  teams looking to cut costs since
they may not have the same money coming in either.

All things to look forward too.

Mariner Spring Training Camp

It looks like players are going to be able to
practice again at the Mariners training site.

At this point don't know when the season
will begin. The players and the owners have
to decide when that will be and where the
games will be played.

The state of Washington is starting to open
up so they could have games at T-Mobile
Park when the season begins, however,
they could decide to have all games in
Arizona as well.

Having games in Seattle would me no
fans or small crowds. It all depends
when King County is able to go through
the four phases. Right now they are still
in phase 1 and not ready for phase 2 yet
though the county is asking for phase
1.5 allowing some additional businesses
to open up.

The Mariners are going to pay each minor
leaguer $400 a week for the rest of the season.
The amount would go up if they end up
having a season. It is unlike the Oakland
A's who have stopped paying their minor
leaguers at the end of May.

The Mariners did release at least 30 minor leaguers
this week. I expect it is the amount of players
they usually release this time of the year anyway.

The high school and college draft will be taking
place soon as well. Usually they have been
drafting 40 rounds, however, this year it will
be five or ten rounds. This means any other
eligible players will be free agents.

College players are eligible after their junior
year of college unless they are junior college
players.  So likely juniors who are not drafted
this year will go back to college for their senior
year.

Not known yet whether next year's draft will
go back to what it was or have less rounds.
We will have to tune in later for that.

At least it looks like baseball maybe around
the corner for us to watch so we will have
to see. Go M's.

Pac-12 Opening Up

The Pac-12 is going to allow all sports to have
voluntary workouts beginning on June 15. This
will depend on the rules of each state during
the pandemic.

King County is still on phase 1 so the likelihood
any Washington Huskies athletes will be able
to do workouts on campus is likely not to happen.

King County will have to be in phase 2 to where
up to five people can be in the same area long as
they continue social distancing. I am sure some
of the Huskies are able to do some workouts on
their own depending on where they are living
right now.

Much of Eastern Washington is opening up to
phase 2 so the Washington State Cougars athletes
should be able to do voluntary workouts long as
they stay in groups of five. If they are able to
move to phase 3 then they can have up to 50
in a group.

Gonzaga is not part of the Pac-12, however, they
should be able to do the same as the Cougars.

This certainly will give the Cougars and the Bulldogs
advantage over the Huskies at this point. When
counties are able to go to phase 4 they will be able
to have large groups. This could happen in late June
for these two team while the Huskies may not reach
the fourth phase until Late July at the earliest.

Seahawk Wedneday

The  Seattle Seahawks are still looking at adding a defensive end.
No word on  Clowney as of yet. The chances are good he will
re-sign with the Seahawks, however, it isn't a sure thing.

The Seahawks were not good  against the run last season so
need improvement from the tackles well as the defensive
ends. Also, the linebackers could use improvement

The Seahawks will need to go back to using another defensive
back on passing downs.  Bobby Wagner should be in on every
 play of defense.

The offense needs to play better and not allow Russell Wilson
do  everything. More the offense in on the field the better for
the defense. Don't need the defensive players get tired over the season.  Go Hawks!

Happy Memoria Day

I want to wish everyone a happy Memorial Day
and what it means to all of us in the United States.

It is unusual day not really having any sports going
on. This is the first time in my life I haven't watched
a live baseball.

The Seattle Seahawks would be getting ready for
training camp and pre-season. At this point we
are not sure if it will happen. At least with fans
in the stands anyway.

The Seattle Sounders are supposed to get back
to training real soon. Not sure how the season
will work out there either. They may do like
the NBA and go to Disney in Florida.

College football we don't know it work either.
The Huskies have a new offensive coordinator
along with head coach. The defense should be
the same, however, the offensive may look a bit
different. The Huskies are looking to play a
pro-type offense. Plays will happen depending
on the other teams defense.

The Washington State Cougars have a new head
coach as well. It will be a passing offense still
but could look a little different.

Again we are not sure whether fans will be in
the stands for college football either. At least
not at the beginning of the season.

We will see won't we. All sports may look
different when things get back to order.

Seahawks Sign Veteran Running Back

Reports came out the Seattle Seahawks have signed
veteran running Carlos Hyde to a one-year contract
for about $4 million.

Hyde has been in the NFL for the last six seasons.
He played four years for the San Francisco 49ers.
Last year with the Houston Texans her ran for over
one thousand yards.

The Seahawks with injuries at the end of last
season to Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny
they decided they need a presence of a veteran
running back. Penny might have to sit out half
of the coming season.

The Seahawks do have Travis Homer who should
some good running skills at the end of last season
when Penny and Carson went down. At this point
though not sure he can carry the ball 20 times or
more. Also, any injuries happen to Homer would
put the Seahawks in a pickle.

This will give the Seahawks three healthy experienced
running backs plus rookie fourth round pick DeeJay
Dallas.

Earlier in the week the Seahawks re-signed up veteran
quarterback Geno Smith to a one-year deal. He was
the Seahawks backup quarterback last year to Russell
Wilson. Coach Pete Carroll likes his presence because
he knows how to  run the offense just in case Wilson
gets hurt for any period of time though he hasn't missed
a game in his NFL career. Go Hawks!

Writing About Sports

Right now not easy to write about sports
since not much going on.

We might see baseball starting up in July
after spring training in June. We have to
see if it really happens.

The NFL might start up in August with
exhibition games as usual.

The Washington Huskies and the WSU
Cougars are hoping to get in practice
in August as well. There non-league
games take place in September so
they could postponed them if necessary.

College basketball doesn't start until
the end of October or beginning of
November so we shouldn't have any
problem there hopefully.

In the meantime, I will write about what
may look ahead.

Seahawk Wednesday

Still not a whole lot going on in Seahawk land.
The main story is still about cornerback Quinton
Dunbar. He is out now on bail after being charged
on four counts of robbery. We will see how it
goes and whether he will play a down for the
Seahawks or not.

On Tuesday Bruce Irvin had a press conference.
He is officially a member again of the Seattle
Seahawks though we have known for several
weeks. He now returns after being gone for
four years. He primarily be used as a pass rusher
though listed as a linebacker.

The Seahawk rookies now have their numbers.
First round pick Jordyn Brooks is going to
wear number 56.

Fourth round pick running back DeeJay
Dallas will be number 31. I am sure most
everyone is familiar with that number.
It was most recently worn by safety
Kam Chancellor.

We will learn of the other rookie players and
the numbers they will be wearing.

Huskies Men's Basketball Bring Another Transfer

Coach Mike Hopkins and the Washington men's
basketball  team have brought in another local
player as a transfer.

The Huskies haven't brought in any freshmen
for this coming season however now have
three transfers.

There is a possibility only one of the three
will play this coming season, however, they
will be ready for 2021.

The latest is Cole Bajema a small forward
out of Lynden, Washington. He played
sparingly last year his freshman season
at Michigan.

It is nice Coach Hopkins is able  to pick
up local players who had made a choice
to go out of state first then decided to
return home.

The Huskies do have a young team so
they do have room to pick up freshman
for 2021. Currently they have one player
Jackson Grant out of Olympia who has
committed to Washington.

Seahawk Cornerback Makes The News

It is never good news when you hear a
NFL player gets involved in a crime.

Seattle Seahawk cornerback Quinton
Dunbar who was acquired during the
off-season from the Washington Redskins
is in trouble for armed robbery in Florida.

According to his lawyer Dunbar was not
involved in a robbery that happened at
a night club. He says Dunbar will be
exonerated. We will see, usually the
truth does come out.

Now the question will Dunbar ever
play for the Seahawks and he could
be suspended at the beginning of the
season as well.

At least he wasn't carrying a gun at
least we understand though his partner
supposedly was.

Anyway, we will see as the story
continues to unfold. So far Dunbar
hasn't turned himself in.

The Seattle Mariners Now

Since spring training was cut short about
two months ago I haven't said a whole
lot about the Mariners. Not a lot of news
has come out.

There is thought spring training could
resume in June and the regular season
in early July.

If this does happen they may have around
81 games. Salaries of players have to be
decided as well.

Staff are taking a 20 percent cut so no one
has to be furloughed like many do in other
industries.

Most likely no baseball at T-Mobile Park
at least with no fans anyway.

All games would be played within their division
plus inner-league play. The Mariners would play
against the National League West.

They have talked to going to three divisions
which would include the teams in the national
west along with the American League West for
the West division.

Whatever the case I am sure everyone is
waiting for live baseball even if they can't
go to the games in person themselves.

We will see let the good times roll.

Seahawk Wednesday: another addition

Not a lot of news coming out of Seahawk camp
as of late, however, newcomer receiver Phillip
Dorsett signed as a free agent a few weeks ago
held a conference call with the media on Tuesday.

Dorsett figures Seattle is the best place for him
to be in this time of his career. He enjoyed his
time with New England, however, thought
Seattle will be a good fit.

With Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf being the
number one and two receivers the Seahawks
figured they could use another receiver at the
top in Dorsett.

All  three receivers can give other teams
misfits through out the game. Metcalf with
his height and speed along with Lockett
and Dorsett with speed.

Russell Wilson loves to throw to both Lockett
and Metcalf. I am sure it won't be different with
Dorsett either. We wish him the best here in
Seattle.

Now we have to see how the Seahawks will do
to improve at the defensive end position whether
Clowney returns or not. Go Hawks!

Missing Sports

Besides having to stay at home we
have to miss live sports as well.

I mentioned live  sports because
we can see old sports on television.

They are broadcasting Korean baseball
on ESPN. I haven't seen a game yet,
however, I am going to check to see
what maybe on today.

On Wednesday I will have another
Seahawk Wednesday. Unless there
is some breaking news I will go over
who the running backs the Seahawks
currently have on  the roster. Go Hawks!

What Does Seahawks Schedule Mean

Thursday night I let you know what the
Seahawks schedule is open for 2020.

I figured since there isn't really any
sports happening right now wanting
to know how much meaning you have
for it since we can't get out of the house
right now.

Of course, we can get out of the house
we just  can't see a lot of people or at
least stand six feet a way.

Depending on the virus we might be
watching the games on television
without a crowd. No home court
advantage for Seahawks unless they
pipe in noise.

We do still have time to see whether
fans will be able to gather in Century
Link Field. In the meantime, enjoy
this great weather we are having this
weekend. Go Hawks!

NFL Schedule Comes Out Late Thursday Afternoon

The Seattle Seahawks schedule came out on  Thursday
night; however, we don't know right now whether the
schedule will stay that way or not.

We do hope the Coronavirus will be over before
the summer is over.

We hope  we see baseball with the Mariners well
as football with the Seahawks along with the Huskies
and Cougars.

The Seahawks start the season on the road against
the Falcons in Atlanta. It will be a 10 am pacific time
game. The game will be on September 13.

The Seahawks first prime time game will be at home
against the New England Patriots Sunday night September
20. We will see no Tom Brady for the first time In a long
time. He is now with Tampa Bay.

The following week the Seahawks will play the Dallas
Cowboys at home on Sunday afternoon September 27.
Week 4 they will play the Miami Dolphins on the road
on Sunday October 4 again in the morning our time.

Week five the Seahawks will again be on Sunday night
football at home against the Minnesota Vikings. The next
week the Seahawks will have a bye.

Week seven the Seahawks will have their first game against
division foe Arizona Cardinals on the road Sunday afternoon
October 25.  The next week November 1st home against
the San Francisco 49ers in the afternoon too.

Week nine ending the first half of the season November 8
Seahawks will play in Buffalo against the Bills another
morning game.

The Seahawks start the second half of the season in Los
Angeles against division foe the Rams on November 15
Sunday afternoon. The Seahawks have a short week playing
the Arizona Cardinals in  their second meeting this time
at home on Thursday night.

Having an 11 day break the Seahawks play the Philadelphia
Eagles on Sunday night football on  the road. on November 30.

The Seahawks will  have three of their four games in December
at home beginning with the New York Giants Sunday afternoon
December 6. The following week  December 13 they will  play
the other New York team in the Jets Sunday afternoon too.

The net week December 20 they play at the Washington Redskins.
They end the month playing the Rams at home Sunday afternoon
December 27.

The Seahawks end the season on the road against the San
Francisco 49ers on January 3 Sunday afternoon.

The last two games could make or break how the Seahawks
do going into the playoffs or not. Go Hawks!

Seahawk Wednesday

It seems Wednesday come along so fast.
We are here again. Still no news  on
Clowney though they are still talking
with him.

The Seahawks signed 12 free agents who
were not drafted. I won't give you the
names because they are not local players
like Anthony Gordon and Aaron Fuller
were last week. Most of them probably
won't be around for the season unless on
the practice squad. They also released
four players as well.

The Seahawks signed two running backs.
Who knows one could be the next Thomas
Rawls.

Also, they signed two defensive tackles and
a defensive end. Plus two tight ends like they
need more of them. One of them probably end
on the practice squad.

Remaining players are one wide receiver,
two cornerbacks, and  two free safeties.

That is it for this week. Anything else happens
before next Wednesday let you know.

Defensive End For Seahawks

I decided not to wait until Seahawk Wednesday
to say anything. I figured since there isn't a lot
sports going on right now I had to post something.

The Seattle Seahawks drafted two defensive ends
last week. They brought back Bruce Irvin recently
as well. None of the three will be playing every
down either. It will be a rotation among the
defensive ends. Also, we can include the defensive
tackles as well.

I am sure the rotation will those who are best
against the run and those best against the pass.
The Seahawks we know were near the bottom
in sacks while the same goes against the run.
So we can see improvement in both areas.

At this time period we still don't know whether
Clowney will return or not. There has been talk
he will sign with Cleveland or Tennessee.

The Seahawks haven't wanted to pay Clowney
what he asked for initially. The price has gone
down whether he signs with the Seahawks or
not unless a team decides yes we will pay
Clowney what he wants.

We know Clowney has a big heart playing at
the end of the year with injuries. He was
successful for the most part as well, however,
the Seahawks don't want to pay the high price
for someone who has been hurt. Understandable.
Of course, Clowney wants to get as much as
he can too. Understandable.

Whether Clowney comes back or not the
Seahawks do look like they have to go
for an experience defensive end to help
Irvin and the rookies out. We will see.

Washington Sports: Inslee Extends State AT Home

Right now we have no idea when sports of
any kind will take place in Washington State
whether we are talking kids, college or
professional  will take place here.

Governor Inslee has extended the state at
home order from May 5. He hasn't given
the new date as of yet, however, I expect
it will be at least May 19 or until the end
of the month depending on the data comes
in.

We still have no idea whether the Mariners
will play in July. The likelihood they will
play in Arizona. There is talk about splitting
up to three divisions. How many games it
could be 100. The draft will take place but
the date isn't sure of either.

Football is another story along with basketball.
Both may be extended out as well.

The Huskies, and Cougars seasons could start
late well as the Seahawks when it comes to
football. We will have to see that is for sure.

Pete Carroll isn't to happy with it all since the
NFL is beginning virtual camp right now.
They are going over the playbook especially
with the rookies and those new to the team
Veterans just have to go through review.

Just like our lives everything is in question.
