Sheffield Help End Skid

Justus Sheffield continues to shine as the
fifth starter out of six on the Mariners
starting rotation.

Sheffield pitched six innings as the Mariners

are keeping his pitch count at a decent amount.

He gave six hits with the Padres scoring one 

run in the third inning when Fernando Tatis Jr.

hit a double than followed by Manny Machado

driving him in with a single. Machado has been

a hitting machine against the Mariners fortunately

this was the only damage he caused.

Catcher Luis Torrens hit a double in the bottom of

the fourth driving in two runs making it 3-1.

Torrens continues showing power as he continues

to catch. Kyle Lewis hit a home run in the seventh

inning for the final run in 4-1 victory.

Justin Dunn has struggled with his pitching over the

last couple outings. He is hoping to get his control

back in order. With eight games remaining Sheffield

and Dunn have one more game each to show what

they got.

Sheffield looks like he has cemented a spot in the

rotation for next year while Dunn still has some 

work to do. Since the Mariners will likely go back

to a five man rotation next year  Dunn will have to

prove he belongs while Sheffield has. 

Next season Logan Gilbert will likely be in the rotation

as well so that really means two pitchers who are 

currently in the rotation will be not on the team or

in the bullpen.

Ljay Newsome recently added to the rotation is one 

while Nick Margevicius is the other.  Nick Margevicius

has struggled in recent outing so he will have to show

himself to in his last outing. So Dunn could still be in

the rotation with Newsome and Nick Margevicius not

in the rotation They could make the bullpen stronger 

than it has been.

Patriots after the Mariner game on Sunday Night Football.

Mariners Continue On Slide

The Seattle Mariners after winning six
straight have been on a slide. For a week
or so they were in the playoff race but
doesn't look so now.

Technically they are because of the 

Houston Astros who are not playing

much better. The Astros are still only

three games ahead of the Mariners.

The Mariners did show they could beat

the poor teams like the Texas Rangers

but teams like the Giants and the Padres

having a hard time with.

Another thing the Mariners are not

playing well on the road and since they

had to move the series against the Giants

and Padres because of poor air quality

hasn't helped either. The Mariners are

12-9 at home but 10-20 on the road.

Friday night the Mariners lost to the

Padres in San Francisco 6-1. Yusei

Kikuchi who has looked good at times

didn't have good control walking a career

high six batters in four innings.

The fourth inning was Kikuchi's last 

inning and toughest one. He has had

a good season not giving up home runs

but he gave up a three-run homer to

Manny Machado who has been feeding

on Mariner pitcher. He hit a home run

off of Walker Lockett in the 9th inning

as well. Walker look good otherwise.

The Mariners were only able to get 

three hits on the night. Padre starter

Chris Paddack went six innings giving

up only one hit. 

Evan White hit a solo home run in the

8th inning for the Mariners only score.

He had two of the Mariners three hits.

Kyle Seager who got off to a good start

has been struggling as of late. In his last

seven games he has two hits in 23 at bats

with only one rbi. His last home run

was against no other than the Texas

Rangers on September 7. His average

has now dipped down to .240.

Justus Sheffield will see if he can pitch

well Saturday night against the Padre

to end the skid temporary any way.

Sheffield and Marco Gonzales have been

their pitchers on the season.

The offense needs to get going as well.

Need the top of the order get on base

with the two Kyles driving them in.

A team in rebuilding mode are going

to have their ups and downs. The 

Mariners are showing they are close

but still some work to do.

At least they have shown us some

excitement along the way. Go M's. 

Mariners Swept Go On To San Diego

The Seattle Mariners looked like they were
going to win the game Thursday afternoon,
however, it wasn't meant to be. The Mariners
were leading 4-1 after two innings, but the
Giants scored two runs in the sixth inning,
and three more in the seventh inning.

Kendall Graveman had pitched since coming

off the injured list and put into the bullpen.

Thursday wasn't one of those good days for

him. He gave up the three runs in the seventh

inning to record the loss.

The Mariners are now 22-28 with ten games

remaining on the season. The Mariners were

expected to play this weekend series in Seattle,

however, the air quality is still such major league

baseball decided to move the series to San Diego.

The Mariners will still be the home team.

The Mariners are now three games behind the

Houston Astros so time is running out to make

the playoffs. The Mariners do play the Astros

in a three game series next Monday thru Wednesday.

It is possible the Mariners can still make the playoffs

by beating the Astros in that series.

The series against the Astros is scheduled in Seattle,

we hope the air quality will be much better to play

the series in Seattle. The Mariners have played better

at home this season than on the road even when 

considered the home team. 

It will be good to see Austin Nola catching for the

Padres. For many of us we haven't seen him play

since the Mariners traded him at trading deadline

on August 31. 

Yusei Kikuchi starts Friday night against the Padres.

The Mariners will need a good start out of Kikuchi.

He pitched well in his last outing after getting off

to a rough start. The Mariners can't afford him to

do the same tonight.

It is interesting to see the Mariners in the playoff

picture in September. It hasn't happened often

in the last 19 years. Being six games under .500

normally they wouldn't be in the pictures but 

because of a shorten season they are. Go M's. 

Giants Have Mariners Number

There are at least one team who has the
Mariners number every season. This
season it looks like the Giants have it.

The opening game of the series was 

cancelled moving the two games to

San Francisco because of the air quality

in Seattle. The Mariners start a series

on Friday in Seattle against the Padres.

Don't know yet the series will be played

in Seattle or moved to San Diego.

Though the game Wednesday was played

in San Francisco the Mariners were the

home team. The same will go for Thursday.

The Giants beat the Mariners 9-3. The 

Giants have beaten the Mariners in all

three games so far. We hope Thursday

the Mariners can salvage a win.

The Giants scored a single run in both

the first and second inning then starter

Ljay Newsome  gave up two home runs

in the third inning making it 5-0.

Erik Swanson came in the fourth inning

but didn't do any better. He gave up three

runs on four hits and two walks while

getting only one out. 

The Mariners scored their three runs in the

bottom of the fourth inning. Kyle Seager

walked, Ty France had a single, catcher

Luis Torrens who seems to have some 

good power hit a double to bring in Seager.

Drew Smyly a former Mariner had trouble

getting the ball over the plate in the fourth

inning ended up walking Phillip Ervin

and JP Crawford with the bases loaded

for the two additional runs. He was lifted

after that.

Reliever Brandon Brennan returned after

being on the injured list. He pitched two

innings giving up a home run in the seventh

inning for the final run of the game.

Nick Margevicius starts Thursday afternoon

against the Giants. His last outing was last

Wednesday against these same Giants when

he gave up seven runs in four and two-third

innings.  We are hoping for better results this

time for sure.

The NFL is looking at the air quality in Seattle

to see what to do about Sunday's game against

the New England Patriots. The air quality is 

supposed to improve. I am sure the Mariners

series against the Padres will determine in part

whether their game will be played on Sunday

night.

The air quality is supposed to improve over

the next couple days but will be good enough

for those making the decisions.  

Seahawk Wednesday

The Seattle Seahawks got off to a good
start on Sunday beating the Atlanta Falcons
on their home field. We hope the same
thing happens this Sunday night against
the New England Patriots.

Jamal Adams is listed as one of the safeties

starting for the Seahawks, however, from

the first game he is going to be all over 

the field.

This Sunday it looks to me he will be in 

the shadow of quarterback Cam Newton.

He will be there rush him at times while

making sure he doesn't run as well.

Whatever, the case the Seahawks have

gotten a player we can be excited about

on the defensive side of the ball. He and

Bobby Wagner are two special players

for the Seahawks. Wagner being a linebacker

won't have as much freedom as Adams does

for the most part. I am sure it will depend 

on the team the Seahawks are playing. 

Though the Seahawks threw the ball more

last Sunday some of the passing plays had

the same results as a running play would have.

Coach Pete Carroll wants to see the Seahawks

run the ball more this Sunday. I believe this

will all work out depending on who the Seahawks

play on any given Sunday.

It is exciting to see Russell Wilson passing the

ball like he did on Sunday but I look forward

to seeing the running game work to. The

important thing is they win in whatever fashion

they do. 

Being able to pass or run the ball makes the

Seahawks more of an effective team. Other

teams will not be able to shut down a team 

that has a strong area of offense on either

passing or running. 

Though Adams did a good job on the defensive

side the defense does have some work still to 

do. We hope to see even a better defense against

the Patriots this Sunday. Go Hawks!

Kelenic and Rodriguez

Tuesday's game against the San Francisco
Giants was cancelled for air quality. The
series is being moved to San Francisco
taking place on Wednesday and Thursday.
Have no idea about the series against
the San Diego Padres over the weekend
as of yet. So writing today about our two
top prospects in Jarred Kelenic and Julio
Rodriquez

Jarred Kelenic has spent the summer

at the alternate training site in Tacoma.

We will see next year how much benefit

it has been for him since no regular season

happened. 

The positive side he is facing better 

pitching in Tacoma than he would have

seen in a regular season though they 

don't play every day. 

Rodriguez on the other hand has missed

some time with an injury but has been

in Tacoma as well. Just being around

players older than him must be helping.

His personality though probably rubbing

off on the other players.

My major thought though of these two

prized prospects we will be in for a good

show if they can come anywhere close

to what Kyle Lewis is doing in his first

full season or I guess phrase partial season

since only 60 games they will be great

to watch. 

Kelenic may start the season next year

in either double-A or triple-A though

they possibility he is in Seattle from the

beginning. Rodriguez most likely see

in 2022. 

It would be nice to see them individually

making their marks as rookies though 

together I wouldn't complain about it

either. At the same time Kyle Lewis 

continue in stardom himself. He 

certainly looks like the real thing.

We have no idea when the Mariners 

will make the playoffs though they

are doing a bang up job this season 

to making it in or close anyway. We

will see over the next two weeks.

In the meantime, we will see a good

show from those three patrolling the

outfield before the team makes the

playoffs. In the infield Dylan Moore

looks to be the real thing as well. He

has worked his way into being an 

everyday player. Moore might end

up being the everyday second baseman

while occasionally playing elsewhere

to. 

Shed Long Jr who is now out for the

remaining of the season might be at

doing the utility thing if he can start

doing some hitting. At least the 

Mariners have a few other choices.

It is to bad a good guy like Dee now

known as Strange-Gordon is not having

a good season It would have been nice

to see him have a good season instead 

of a has been. We hope for the best

in his career ahead. He can get his

bat back to what it was.

Mariners Split Double Header

The Seattle Mariners didn't look like they would
win the opening game of the double header to the
Oakland A's.

Marco Gonzales didn't have one of his better 

outings though he was able to go six innings in

a seven inning affair which saved the bullpen

for the second game.

He gave up four runs in the fourth inning on

two home runs after giving up a run in the

second inning. The Mariners scored a run

in the bottom of the fourth inning on Luis

Torrens first major league home run so

the A's were leading 5-1.

The game fell apart for the A's in the fifth

inning when Jose Marmolejos and Kyle

Lewis each hit a home run. So the Mariners

went into the sixth inning behind 5-4.

The A's didn't score a run in the top of the

sixth however the Mariners got to reliever

Joakim Soria who had a hard time getting

the ball over the plate. Tim Lopes brought

up before the game had three doubles in 

the game including the sixth inning. 

After Lopes tied the game on a walk Kyle

Lewis came up and walked the go ahead

run making it 6-5. The A's were not able

to score a run in the top of the seventh so

the Mariners won.

In the second game it was all Oakland

winning 9-0. Mike Minor went the 

distance for the A's giving up two hits

and two walks.  Kyle Lewis and Donovan

Walton had the two hits. The highlight for

the Mariners was Lewis robbing the A's 

of a grand slam home run. So you see it

could have even been worse.

Jimmy Yacabonis came out of the bullpen

to start for the Mariners. He went one and

a third innings giving up only one run.

The problem came when recently called

up reliever Seth Frankoff gave up five runs

on five hits along with two walks in one and

two-thirds inning. He didn't even give up

a home run in the process.

Brady Lail pitched the last four innings for

the Mariners. He gave up three runs on two

home runs. At least he saved the bullpen for

another day, 

Ljay Newsome who was hit on a liner in 

his last start in the second inning putting him

out of the game will start the opening of the

two game series Tuesday night. We wish him

the best in that game.
