Bishop Up Smith Sent Down

Mallex Smith has struggled both at the plate and in the field since the beginning of the season. He had a rough time going since he missed most of spring training. Also, it looks like his helmet always off too. The coaches have been working with him but time showed they needed to send him to triple-A. The Rainiers are in Salt Lake City so he had trouble getting there because of Sea-Tac but should be available for tomorrows game.

Braden Bishop is in the lineup batting eighth ahead of Dee Gordon. He will be the primary center fielder though I am sure we will see Mitch Haniger there when not in right field.

The future centerfielder we are not sure of right now. Smith could be there when he corrects things or Bishop if he is able to hit major league baseball.

Both players could eventually be in the lineup as well. Bishop is a right-handed hitter while Smith hits left-handed. Jay Bruce is the fourth outfielder well as playing some first base along with dh. It is crowded right now with Bruce, Edwin Encarnacion, and Daniel Vogelbach sharing dh and first base. It will be interesting when Kyle Seager returns in about a month to six weeks to go back at third base. The Mariners will have to decide whether Ryon Healy will have to go to triple-A or they will have to trade either Bruce Encarnacion. Healy could be traded as well. Right now Vogelbach seems to be in the Mariners present as well as future.

The answer coming up will depend whether the Mariners are winning or losing. The month of May will answer a lot of questions. We thought the same last year when the Mariners did so well in June then fell apart the rest of the season.

This year the Mariners have a lot of different players so we can't say whether they will do well or not. They continue winning means they are coming together sooner than expected which would be nice.

Tuesday and Wednesday take on the Chicago Cubs followed by the Cleveland Indians on Friday thru Sunday before going back on the road where they seem to be playing better. Go M's.

Mariners and Rangers Split Series

The series started out well for the Mariners winning the first two games however the Rangers came back to beat up the Mariners on Saturday night  15-1 then 14-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Not only was the Mariners pitching not good neither was the defense. It continues to a problem all season long. The Mariners had three errors on Saturday and four on Sunday.

Tim Beckham and Mallex Smith continue having problems in the field. Beckham's problem continues to be his throwing and Smith is his fielding.  Also, Smith continues to have problems at the plate as well as not getting a hit in four at-bats. His batting average is now at .165. Smith because of a shoulder injury missed most of spring training. He didn't make the trip to Japan so made his first start when the Mariners got back to Seattle facing the Red Sox. The Mariners probably should have left him in extended spring training and a rehab assignment before activating him on the roster.

The Mariners now take on the Chicago Cubs Tuesday and Wednesday then take on the Cleveland Indians for three next weekend in Seattle. Be a good homestand if the Mariners can take three out of five of the games or four out of five. The Mariners hitting and pitching has to get better. Go M's.

Mariners Lose Big Time

There is not much to say except Mike Leake didn't pitch well and again the Mariners had three errors. The final score was 15-1. At least Sunday is another day and the Mariners can take the series by winning.

The Mariners lone run was in the first inning when Domingo Santana hit a home run. He now has 30 rbi's tying Ken Griffey Jr for the most in Mariner history in March/April. Stays on course he might have 100 rbi's by the all-star break.

Leake is a control pitcher so when he isn't hitting his spots a lot of runs can be scored against him and that is what happened. The Mariners left him out for five innings with ten hits and nine runs scored against him. With the three errors, he was charged for only five.

The Rangers started off fast with Elvis Andrus hitting a home run with two runners on base. The Rangers scored three more runs in the second and two in the third so 8-1 just like that. The Rangers scored one run in the 5th, 6th and 8th inning.

Mike Wright made his first appearance in a Mariner uniform in the sixth inning. He pitched two innings with three hits, one run, two walks, and three strikeouts. The Mariners have some work to do with him. At least this was a blow out so they could see first hand where he is at.

Chasen Bradford who was the only relief pitcher not to pitch on Friday night went one inning Saturday night taking over for Wright in the eighth inning. He gave up two hits and a run.

The Mariners had utility player Dylan Moore pitch the 9th inning where he gave up four runs. I would say I hope they don't need to use him on the mound again.

Moore started the game at second base giving Dee Gordon the night off. Being a blow out game they had catcher Omar Narvaez who hadn't played go in at second base.

Mike Minor who started the game for the Rangers went seven innings striking out 13 Mariners. Not a good day at the plate for the Mariners. Besides Santana's home run only Mitch Haniger and Ryon Healy had a hit.

Erik Swanson pitches Sunday for the Mariners. He has pitched well so far though suffering two losses. We all hope he does well again and this time has a victory. Go M's.

Seahawk Pics NFL Saturday

The first pick of the Seahawks in the fourth round on Saturday was Gary Jennings a wide receiver from West Virginia. He is an interesting pick because he played youth basketball with Russell Wilson's sister and Russell was his coach while in high school. It is amazing how life works sometimes.

The Seahawks drafted #22 in the fourth round for guard Phil Haynes out of Wake Forest. Like many of these players don't much about him, however, he does add depth to the Seahawks offensive line. We will have to see whether he will start at guard for the Seahawks or be a backup.

The 3rd pick for the Seahawks in the 4th round was Ugo Amadl a free safety from Oregon. The fourth pick in the 5th round was a local favorite in Ben Burr-Kirvin linebacker from the Washington Huskies. He like most of the Huskies draft picks he has a good attitude in playing football. He should learn a lot from linebackers Bobby Wagner and KJ Wright.

The Seahawks drafted two players in the sixth round running back Travis Homer out of Miami University and defensive tackle Demarcus Christmas from Florida State. The Seahawks made a trade picking up wide receiver John Ursua who played at Hawaii.

Washington Huskies players drafted were.

Besides Ben Burr-Kirvin being drafted by the Seahawks defensive tackle Greg Gaines was drafted ahead of him in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Rams. He joins teammate safety Taylor Rapp who was taken by the Rams early in the 3rd round.

Cornerback Jordan Miller was drafted in the fifth round by the Atlanta Falcons joining teammate offensive tackle Kaleb McGary who was drafted in the first round.

Finally Myles Gaskin Huskies all-time rusher was drafted in the 7th round by the Miami Dolphins. Quarterback Jake Browning signed with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent.

The only Washington Cougar taken today was quarterback Gardner Minshew in the 6th round by the Jacksonville Jacquars. He will be competing for the backup job.

Running James Williams who decided to come out early was not drafted however he signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Friday Night Mariners Win Seahawks Add Three Players

The Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers once again winning 5-4 in eleven innings. The Mariners used the whole bullpen except Chasen Bradford. I expect he will likely be the first one out of the bullpen Saturday night. Mike Wright who the Mariners acquired on Wednesday will be activated Saturday so he will likely make his debut with the Mariners too.

The Mariners had a 4-2 lead going into the eighth inning but they couldn't hold it. Brandon Brennan the fifth pitcher out of the bullpen struggled in the eighth inning walking two batters and giving up a double to make the score 4-3. This was his second poor performance in 13 games. I would take that if it only happens every six or seven games that is for sure. Anthony Swarzak came in the 9th to see if he could get a save but gave up a home run to tie the game at 4-4. Former Mariner Shin-Soo Choo pinch hit for the Rangers catcher had the homer.

Roenis Elias pitched the 10th and 11th innings without giving up a hit and struck out two batters. Elias recorded the win as Mitch Haniger hit an infield grounder with the bases loaded but the Rangers were unable to complete a double play.

The Mariners now will see if they can win the series over the Rangers Saturday with Mike Leake going for them.

The Seattle Seahawks did some more maneuvering moving down the draft than up as well. They ended up with three picks on Friday with five picks to go on Saturday. Four of the five picks are in the 4th round and the last is in the 5th round.

The Seahawks picked two players from the University of Utah. The first 2nd round pick they selected Marquise Blair a free safety. Though he doesn't have the size he does hit like recently retired Kam Chancellor. The other player from Utah was Cody Barton an inside linebacker. So we could see him groomed to take some snaps in place of Bobby Wagner. I am sure he will be used on special teams too.

The Seahawks moved up to get another 2nd round pick. It was the last pick of the second round. They decided to go on the offense side of the ball picking up DK Metcalf from Ole Miss. He is a speed receiver who can match up with Tyler Lockett. There is talk to because of multiple injuries and surgeries Doug Baldwin may retire.

The Washington Huskies had three players taken in the second round after having one in the first round. Cornerback Bryon Murphy was the very first selection in the 2nd round being taken by the Arizona Cardinals. So he will be teaming up in the Cardinals defensive backfield with former Husky Budda Baker.

Tight end Drew Sample was picked by Cincinnati Bengals then the Los Angeles Rams moved up to take safety Taylor Rapp.

No Washington State Cougar was taken in day two of the draft. Saturday we should see quarterback Gardner Minshew taken at some point. Also, running James Williams is expected as well. Williams value is he is a good receiver out of the backfield. He could be a career third down back.

Later today I will let you know who the Seahawks draft along with other Huskies and Cougars who are picked.

Seahawks Pick Defensive Lineman

I am sure most Seahawk fans were not surprised. They had two first-round picks after acquiring one from the Kansas City Chiefs for Frank Clark. Once again they traded down in this draft. They kept the pick for Frank Clark, however, first traded their number one pick #21 to the Green Bay Packers for their number one pick at #30 along with a couple additional picks. Just before picking in the first round they traded #30 to the New York Giants for a second rounder plus a couple additional picks.

Going into the draft the Seahawks had five picks including the two first rounders. They now have eight picks going into day two after selecting L.J. Collier out of TCU in the first round. Head coach Pete Carroll says Collier reminds him of former Seahawk Michael Bennett which means to me we will probably see him playing outside at defensive end well as some time at tackle.

The Seahawks will draft early Friday night in the 2nd round well as having a pick in the third round as well. Saturday they will be busy early having four picks in the 4th round and then two in the 5th round. It would not surprise me if they move up from the 3rd round along with giving away a couple of the 4th rounds or taking one of the 4th rounders and moving down to add a couple in the 6th or 7th rounds. Whatever the case it will be interesting. For now welcome L.J.Collier to the fold.

Far as the Washington State Cougars and the Washington Huskies each team had a player taken in the first round. It is the first time since 1995 that both a Cougar and Husky went in the first round. The Philadelphia Eagles #22 took Adre Dillard offensive tackle from Washington State, and #31 Atlanta Falcons took an offensive tackle Kaleb McGary from Washington. We wish them both a good and long career in the NFL.

Thursday night to honor the Seahawks and the NFL draft the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 14-2. The Mariners were not too kind to the Rangers starting pitcher Taylor Hearn who was making his major league debut. He lasted only a third of an inning giving up five runs while giving up three hits along with four walks. He had trouble getting the ball over the plate.

The Rangers had to use five relief pitchers in the game. The first three relievers gave up runs to the Mariners. This means to it will not be easy for the Rangers bullpen the rest of the series. I am sure we will see all five relievers at some point in the other three games in the series. We hope this allows the Mariners to have a successful series against the Rangers.

Next update will see who the Seahawks pick Friday night and how the Mariners do as well.

Mariners Split Road Trip

The Mariners did well beating the Los Angeles Angels taking 3 out of 4 however lost again Wednesday to the San Diego Padres 1-0 making the road trip 3-3. I was hoping the Mariners would be able to split the games in San Diego. The Mariners used to do well when playing inter-league play however last year they were 6-14. They would have made the playoffs last year if the record was reversed or at least having a winning record. Losing the first two to the Padres doesn't mean it will happen again this year having a bad record in inter-league play but not a good start for sure.

The difference in the game Ian Kinsler hit a home run off of Felix Hernandez in the second inning. It was one of only three hits Felix gave up in seven innings. He struck out eight batters as well. This was his best pitching performance in a long time. I am sure the Mariners are hoping this will continue.

The Mariners offense is having problems scoring runs when they don't hit home runs. At least it has only happened in a handful of games. The Mariners need to get Mallex Smith going to be a double threat with Dee Gordon to help score runs when the long ball isn't happening. They should have found a way to score at least one or two runs against the Padres on Wednesday afternoon.

The two hits the Mariners had in this game were by Domingo Santana and Daniel Vogelbach the two hottest hitters in the lineup as well. Vogelbach's hit didn't come until the ninth inning. Each team had one batter walk in the game as well.

Now the Mariners come home to play six games with four against the Texas Rangers and two against the Chicago Cubs. We hope this time they can take 4 wins out of 6 games. Go M's.

In other local sports news the NFL Draft late Thursday afternoon beginning at 5 pm pacific daylight savings time. The Seahawks trading Frank Clark to the Kansas City Chiefs they have two first round picks along with three other picks in later rounds. Now having two first round picks we will probably see the Seahawks trading at least one of them if not both so they can add additional draft picks. Keeping both picks would mean the Seahawks found two impact players to bolster their roster.

I will keep you up to date over the next three days on the draft. Not only the Seahawks but the players being drafted who played for the Washington Huskies and Washington State Cougars. Also, anyone else who is from the state of Washington. Best to all.

Mariners Lose to Padres Tuesday

The Seattle Mariners opened inter-league play on Tuesday losing to the Padres in San Diego 6-3. They play again Wednesday afternoon before returning to Seattle against the Texas Rangers for four games before taking on the Chicago Cubs for two next Tuesday and Wednesday at home. In all the Mariners play 20 games inter-league play. Most of the games are against the National League Central.

Erik Swanson pitched another good game in his second start for the Mariners going five and two-thirds innings. He made two big mistakes giving up home runs to right fielder Franmil Reyes in the second and sixth inning. The Padres scored three runs in both the second and sixth inning. Also, catcher Austin Hedges hit a home run for the Padres in the sixth inning.

The Seattle Mariners had two runs scored in the fifth inning and one in the seventh. They had no home runs in this game. One of the few times they haven't had one in a game.

Gordon Beckham drove in the two runs in the fifth inning hitting a double while Domingo Santana drove in his 27th run of the season in the seventh inning. Santana leads the American League in RBI's.

Felix Hernadez pitches Wednesday afternoon for the Mariners. He has a 1+1 record with an ERA of 4.91. The Mariners are hoping Felix can go at least five innings with little damage in the game.  Go M's.

Frank Clark Goes to Kansas City

The Seattle Seahawks traded defensive end Frank Clark to the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday. In return they receive the Chiefs number one draft pick this year along with a number two round pick next year and the two teams switch third round picks this year as well.

Now the Seahawks will likely draft a defensive end to replace Clark. They now have five picks in this year's draft. They could move down trading one or both of the first round picks to receive more picks in this year's draft.

Although I like Frank Clark as a player I am not sure he or any other defensive ends are worth the money they would have put out for over several years. This will mean to the Seahawks will be able to afford to pay Bobby Wagner on his next contract.

The Seahawks most likely will sign a free agent defensive end at a lower cost as well. I am sure we will hear more before the draft comes up in two days.

In baseball news, the Mariners have reactivated Chasen Bradford off the injury list. Rueben Alaniz returns to Tacoma. Alaniz didn't do well when he came up to the Mariners recently. We will see whether he gets another chance during this season. At least we hope that he helps the Rainiers who have had trouble with pitching out of the bullpen.

NFL Draft Coming Up

The Seattle Seahawks have the 21st pick of the first round. The NFL draft begins on Thursday with the first round only going. The second and third rounds will go Friday and four through ten on Saturday.

The Seahawks have only four picks right now going into the draft. Unless they trade a player like Frank Clark the best option for the Seahawks is to trade down. This means they will pick either later in the first round or not until Friday taking their first selection in the second round.

The only reason I would see the Seahawks not trading down outside of making a trade before the draft is if the player they see still available would be an impact player and they feel he would not still be there when moving down. The Seahawks decide to keep Frank Clark the thought is they will draft a defensive end that will play on the other side of him.

There is a lot of very good defensive lineman in this draft so moving down could still land the Seahawks one they would like to have. The Seahawks decided not to draft a defensive lineman early the likelihood it will still be a defensive player. In this case, it would be a defensive back.

At some point in the draft, we will probably see the Seahawks drafting an offensive lineman and a wide receiver. The Seahawks can always add an offensive lineman to improve the positions. A wide receiver is a good choice because no one knows right now whether Doug Baldwin will be on the team or he will decide to retire. He has had several operations during the off-season. We do hope on his return but the Seahawks will have to plan on a future without him as well.

So if you plan to watch or listen during the NFL draft I would wait for a while if the purpose to find out who the Seahawks are picking. Go Hawks!

Mariners Not Able to Sweep Angels

The Seattle Mariners were not able to sweep the Los Angeles Angels Sunday afternoon losing 8-6. They did make it interesting since they were down by six runs going into the 9th inning. Tom Murphy and Dee Gordon hit back to back home runs than Mitch Haniger hit a two-run homer. Domingo Santana walked bringing  Edwin Encarnacion up as the tying run with two outs. Encarnacion had an infield pop up to end the game but did make it interesting.

Mike Leake didn't pitch a good game though he was able to go six innings. He gave four runs on six hits. The Angels were able to get three home runs off of him. The Mariners may have won had the bullpen were able to stop the Angels. Shawn Armstrong gave up two runs on three hits in the seventh inning and rookie R.J. Alaniz gave up a home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Being down by six runs going into the seventh inning it made sense not to bring in your top relievers but the Mariners needed relievers who can pitch effectively when their times come.

Now the Mariners go to San Diego for two games on Tuesday and Wednesday. They split those games than the road trip will be a good success.  Go M's.

Mariners Going For Sweep

The Seattle Mariners are now going for the sweep against the Los Angeles Angels Sunday afternoon after beating them 6-5. The position players wanted the game bad so Yusei Kikuchi could have his first major league win. It wasn't his best performance but now he is 1-1.

Kikuchi went five innings giving up four runs on ten hits. The Mariners had for relievers closing out the game. Anthony Swarzak recording his third save of the season gave up a solo home run to Albert Pujols.

Mitch Haniger led off the game with a home run. The Mariners scored two runs in the first inning having Daniel Vogelbach hitting a home run as well. In the fourth inning, Dee Gordon had the one-thousandth hit of his career. He drove in two runs with the hit.

The Mariners scored their final two runs on home runs by Edwin Encarnacion in the fifth inning and Domingo Santana in the 7th inning to round out the scoring.

Mike Leake will take the mound Sunday afternoon to see the Mariners can sweep the Angels. The Mariners are a full game ahead of the Houston Astros after they lost to the Texas Rangers 9-4 Saturday night.

The Mariners will have Monday off then play the Padres in San Diego on Tuesday and Wednesday. Erik Swanson and Felix Hernandez are scheduled to pitch in both those games. Go M's.

Mariners Make It 15

The Seattle Mariners are now 15-8 just percentage points behind the Houston Astros. The Mariners are 10-1 on the road. Say the Mariners won 15 out of every 23 games on the season they will end up with 105 wins. Even one less at 14 out of 23 they will have 98 wins.  The chances of both are unlikely but it is nice to think about anyway.

The Mariners had a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Marco Gonzales had pitched a good game, however, Mike Trout hit a home run with a runner on base to tie at 3-3. I am not sure why Servais left Gonzales in the game or at least why pitch to Trout. I would have walked Trout even though the winning run would have been coming up to bat. You think Servais would have learned by now not to pitch to Trout.  Maybe he knows it now.

The Mariners though were able to rebound by Tim Beckham and Omar Narvaez hitting solo home runs back to back in the ninth inning. They had the bases loaded to but were unable to score any more runs so they settled on a 5-3 win. Roenis Elias came in and recorded his second save in two nights with four on the season. Elias began his Mariner career pitching long relief and starting but now shows he can come in at any time to pitch. Whether he is the closer for long term or not we will find out. Right now Servais is going with the hot hand or situation in the game.

The Mariners did have two home runs earlier in the game as well. Jay Bruce had a solo home run in the second inning and Daniel Vogelbach in the 4th had a two-run homer to give the Mariners the three runs. It would be nice if the Mariners could add on throughout the game,  but as long as they keep winning is the point.

Yusei Kikuchi will be taking the mound Saturday night to see if he can win his first game of the season and in the major leagues. How the Mariners bats are doing in Anaheim he has a good shot in doing so. Mike Leake will pitch Sunday afternoon to finish off the four-game series against the Angels. Go M's.

Mariners End Losing Streak

The Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels Thursday night 11-10. It was a crazy game where the Mariners had a lead of 10-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. In fact, the Mariners scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning or they would have lost the game.

The Angels scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. They tied the game in the eighth inning, however, Jay Bruce hit a single in the top of the ninth inning going the other way from the shift. I don't understand why teams put on the shift with runners on base. I am glad though Bruce was willing to go the other way.

Ryon Healy had an outstanding game at the plate hitting two home runs and driving in five runs. Also, catcher Omar Narvaez had a good night as well having three hits including a three-run homer in the seventh inning. He drove in four runs total.

Felix Hernandez pitched well going six innings. He should have received the win if the Mariners bullpen didn't do their job. Angels had two home runs after Felix left the game.

The Mariners likely will bring someone up for a place in the bullpen. Triple-A Tacoma their bullpen hasn't been doing very well lately. Let you know how that goes for sure.

Marco Gonzales goes Friday night for the Mariners. We will see if he can get his fifth win of the season against the Angels. Go M's.

Russell Wilson Signs His New Contract Wedneday

Russell Wilson and the Seahawks made it official on Wednesday by signing a $140 million contract. He said now he is a Seahawk for life. Well, it is good for four years anyway.

When the contract expires he will be 34 years old so he will be able to sign another contact long as he stays healthy and productive. He is now the richest player in the NFL. How long that lasts is anyone's guess.

The next up will the Seahawks be able to sign Frank Clark and Bobby Wagner to new deals. I would say Wagner is the priority. Clark does have the franchise tag to sign but he is likely waiting to see about a long term deal. I am not sure if he is worth around $20 million a year which looks to be the going rate for a pass-rushing defensive end. My question is how many victories does he contribute too.

Wagner I am sure will be asking around $18 million. As a middle linebacker, he seems to be someone to make a bigger difference on the defensive side. He leads the Seahawks in tackles every year.

Another question can the Seahawks afford to keep Wilson, Wagner, and Clark on the same team to be competitive. If the Seahawks can only sign Wagner or Clark I would go with Wagner. He has had a lot longer success record with the Seahawks. Not that Clark won't it is hard to tell right now.

They do decide not to sign Clark to a long term deal a trade before the draft would be good. The Seahawks have only four picks right now so general manager John Schneider will look to add more picks. He will have to trade a player or move down in the first round. The Seahawks right now have #21 overall pick in the draft which starts next Thursday night. There is expected to have a lot of defensive lineman in the upper rounds of the draft so the Seahawks will be able to find someone lower down either in the first or second round. I wouldn't be surprised if they move down in the first round picking up a couple picks than move again maybe in the second round with additional picks.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what happens in the next week and over next weekend.

Mariner's Losing Streak Goes to Six

I am sure we have to say it has been a tough six games watching the Mariners after starting off 13-2. On the bright side if they win 13 games in every 21 games they will end up with 91 wins with 4 games remaining. The home run streak ended with the Mariners being shut out 1-0. It was so close because the umpires called Ryon Healy's hit a home run in the third inning and then it was overturned by replay. Probably a reason I am not a big fan of instant replay. The Mariners seem to get hurt by instant replay more than any other team.

Erik Swanson making his first major league start for the Mariners pitched a fantastic game. He gave up one run on a homer to Jake Bauers in the 5th inning. It was only Bauers second home run of the season. So a bit of tough luck and throwing one bad pitch. In six innings he gave up only two hits while striking out five batters. I would say Swanson is going to win a lot of game if he pitches anywhere like he did on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mariners at the plate in all six games. It didn't help to go against some pretty good pitchers as well. Carlos Carrasco started for the Indians giving up only three hits and no runs in seven innings. He walked two and struck out 12 batters. A problem the Mariners had in the homestand was striking out so much. Carrasco had started off poorly in his previous starts so he was due since he is a pretty good pitcher. It is too bad he couldn't wait until his next start instead of against the Mariners.

The Mariners now go to Anaheim to play the Angels for four games before going to San Diego for two. The Angels are 8-10 on the season, however, are 6-1 at home. Hopefully, the Mariners can change that. The Padres are 11-8 but 4-5 at home so we can hope the Mariners can win in San Diego as well. If the Mariners can go 4-2 on the road trip that would be a good sign. Go M's.

Mariners Losing Streak Continues

The Seattle Mariners had another tough night on Tuesday. Losing again for the second time at home to the Cleveland Indians 4-2. The offense could not come alive once again. So the losing streak is now at five games. At least they still have a record of 13-7.

The Mariners started the scoring in the second inning when Tim Beckham hit a double and scored on one of Tom Murphy's three hits. Unfortunately, the Mariners were unable to take advantage of Murphy's other two hits. He had two doubles and a single. Also, he has caught all of Mike Leake's games so far.

Speaking of Leake he pitched six innings giving up eight hits and two runs. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.

Roenis Elias relieved Leake in the seventh. He gave up the two last runs to Cleveland. It was his worst outing of the season.

Cory Gearrin pitched the eighth inning giving up one hit, struck out two and no runs. It is possible he is over his control problems since he didn't walk a batter. We hope he can continue doing well the Mariners need his help coming out of the bullpen.

Shawn Armstrong in his third outing after coming off the disabled list gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth inning but no runs.

Jay Bruce extended the home run streak getting one in the eighth inning but not enough to go toward a win. I am sure the Mariner players wish the streak now at 20 games in a row would be over if it meant a victory or two. Bruce is hitting .175 with eight home runs. He is acting like Mike Zunino all or nothing.  At least he didn't strike out.

The Mariners now play Indians in the final game of the series and homestand for a late afternoon game. Erik Swanson makes his first start for the Mariners substituting for Wade LeBlanc who went on the injured list. LeBlanc could be out for a month.

The Mariners go on the road to play four against the Los Angeles Angels and two against the San Diego Padres before returning home to face the Texas Rangers on April 25.

Russell Wilson along with the Mariners

The Seattle Mariners were hoping to end their losing streak with a win Monday night over the Cleveland Indians, however, it didn't happen. They did extend their streak of hitting at least one home run in a game. Edwin Encarnacion and Omar Narvaez hit back to back home runs in the eighth inning to narrow the lead to 5-4.  The Indians added another run in the ninth inning because of throwing errors by shortstop Tim Beckham who has been having problems in the field at times.

Kikuchi was able to go six innings though his fastball wasn't able to get over the plate on a regular basis. He walked three batters in the process. The Mariners bullpen along with questionable calls on strikes by the home plate umpire once again didn't help matters either. The relievers had trouble walking four batters over three innings.

Now we hope Tuesday the Mariners bats can come back alive and end this losing streak of four games. It would be nice to get back on another winning streak whether it is two or three games even.

Mike Leake will take the mound Tuesday night. We hope he can bounce back from a terrible outing last time. On Wednesday afternoon Erik Swanson will make his first start in the major leagues for the Mariners. He takes the spot of Wade LeBlanc who might be out for a month.

In other news,  Russell Wilson announced early in the morning that he and the Seattle Seahawks did come to an agreement so he will be around until at least 2023. He will become the highest paid player in the NFL for now anyway.

Now that this is over we can get on with baseball.  Go M's.

Mariners Have Tough Loss to Astros

The Seattle Mariners were able to get a 2-0 lead over the Houston Astros Sunday afternoon including another home run by Mitch Haniger extending the streak to 18 games. Haniger scored both the Mariner runs with Domingo Santana driving him in the third inning.

Marco Gonzales pitched well going into the sixth inning when he started tiring. He gave up two runs when Michael Brantley hit a single driving in Tony Kemp and Jose Altuve. The Astros were able to load the bases, however, Brandon Brennan coming in was able to get a double play that ended the inning with a tie at 2-2. Unfortunately, he gave up a solo home run in the seventh inning to DH Aledmys Diaz.

The Astros were able to keep the Mariners from tying or winning the game. There were some questionable strikes called by home umpire Tichnor especially one on Santana that was on strike three. Astros catcher did a good job of picturing the pitch. The ball was high but he brought it down enough Tichnor wasn't able to see. Pitches to Vogelbach were bad as well. He to struck out to end the game.

Robert Asuna Astros closer was able to shut down the Mariners in all three games by getting a save in each one. He now has seven saves on the season.

The Mariners now have a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians before going on the road to Anaheim to play the Angels. Hopefully, the Mariners will be able to rebound in the series against Cleveland. The Mariners were in each game but didn't have the luck to win any of the games.

Other news the Seattle Mariners traded catcher David Freitas to the Milwaukee for minor league pitcher Sal Biasi who is pitching in single-A ball. The Mariners had three catchers on the Tacoma Rainiers roster so they felt it was important to trade one of them. Biasi is 23 years old, he was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 11th round in 2017 draft out of Penn State. I am sure Jerry Dipoto sees a lot of potential in Biasi.

The Mariners called up Erik Swanson once again this time because Wade LeBlanc went on the disabled list after hurting his oblique on his shoulder Friday night. Hard to know when LeBlanc will return, however, the Mariners hope it will be in ten days.

Right now don't know whether Swanson will pitch start in LeBlanc's spot on Wednesday or not. A lot will depend on how the series goes beforehand against Cleveland. I am sure the Mariners hope Swanson will start but I am sure they will do what is best. Go M's.

Astros Edge Mariners

The Mariners were in a tough matchup with Justin Verlander having one of his great games where he was almost untouchable. Felix Hernandez pitched a good game as well, however, being a little unlucky kept the Mariners from winning the game.

The Mariners were unable to get to Verlander until the fourth inning when Mitch Haniger hit a solo home run. Haniger like some of his teammates were able to get Verlander to throw a lot of pitches but he was the only one to be able to get a hit. Before the home run, Verlander was pitching a perfect game. Verlander was only able to go six innings because of his pitch count. When he left the game he had struck out 11 Mariner hitters without walking a batter along with one other hit besides the home run off of Haniger's bat.

Felix pitched a good game as well for the Mariners. Just like Verlander, he went six innings but gave up two home runs. Felix gave up six hits, three runs, walked one and struck out five. I would have to say pitching this way he would win a lot of games. We hope that Felix can continue pitching this way.

In the seventh inning, the Mariners had the chance to score a couple runs having Vogelbach and Tim Beckham on second and third however Omar Narvaez struck out. Ryon Healy hit a ball to deep right-center that looked like Vogelbach and Beckham could have scored but centerfielder Marisnick was able to run down the ball to end the threat. The Mariners were unable to anything going in the eighth or ninth inning.

Both Brandon Brennan who pitched an inning of outstanding ball and Connor Sadzeck for two innings striking out two batters to give the Mariners a chance. The final score Houston 3 Mariners 1. The home run ball by Haniger continues the streak for 17 games. The Mariners have a record of 13-4 and are two games ahead of the Astros.

Marco Gonzales will pitch Sunday going for his fifth win on the season against Gerrit Cole who is 0-2 despite a 3.32 ERA. We hope the Mariners offense comes back alive against the Astros on Sunday to win a game in the series before facing Cleveland Indians on Monday.

Mariners Lose To Astros

The Seattle Mariners started out well Friday night against the Houston Astros at home at T-Mobile Park. Yes it is hard to remember it isn't Safeco Field any longer.  The Mariners scored a run in the first inning with a hit by Tim Beckham that brought in a run. They could have had more runs scored since they had several runners on base and Wade Wiley had thrown 40 pitches already in the first inning. In the second inning, the Mariners scored two more runs to make the score 3-0. It looked like the Mariners were on the way to another victory but it turned out not to be.

The top of the third inning George Springer hit a two-run homer to make the lead 3-2. Wiley throwing so many pitches left the game after four innings. The two-run homer given up by LeBlanc were the only two runs he gave up on the night but he had to leave the gave in the fifth inning because of an oblique injury. It looks like LeBlanc will be out for a while, but how long won't know until later on Saturday so the Mariners will have to recall a pitcher to take his spot.

The likely two pitchers who will take LeBlanc's spot in the rotation and the roster will be Justus Sheffield who started Friday night for the Tacoma Rainiers or Erik Swanson who pitched his first time on Thursday in Kansas City. He was sent back down to Tacoma on Friday along with reliever Matt Festa.

Shawn Armstrong who was recalled on Friday from Tacoma where he was on a rehab assignment came in for LeBlanc. I know there are those who are questioning Servais reason for putting Armstrong into the game with a one-run lead because he ended up giving up a grand slam home run to Jose Altuve in the sixth inning. This made the score 6-3 Astros. The Mariners were able to score two runs in the seventh inning to make it a close game once again being behind 6-5.

In the eighth inning though R.J. Alaniz who was making his Mariner debut also being recalled from Tacoma on Friday was not made welcomed either by the Astros. He gave up a grand slam home run as well to make the score 10-5.

Catcher Tom Murphy ended up hitting his first home of the season. This extended the Mariners having a home run in each of their sixteen games a major league record to make the final Houston 10 Seattle 6. The Mariners now have a season record of 13-3. Now they have to see if they can even the series Saturday night with Felix Hernandez starting against Justin Verlander. Won't be an easy task but the Mariners continue hitting well off the other team's starter.

Besides making a move to replace LeBlanc for now the Mariners will probably send Alaniz back down to Tacoma and bring up another fresh reliever since he pitched two innings as well. I am sure if he is sent down we will see him again.

The loss to the Astros means the Mariners now have a three-game lead over Houston who has a record of  9-5. The Oakland A's are a game behind Houston at 10-8.

The Mariners have been able to come to win after all three losses so I believe they can do so once again. Go M's.

Mariners Sweep KC

Most of Thursday afternoon it didn't look like the Mariners would sweep the Kansas City Royals on the road. In fact, going into the 9th inning the Mariners were behind 6-4. Actually, Mitch Haniger had a 3-2 count with two outs when he hit a triple to bring in the tying runs. When you are off to a great start like the Mariners those things happen. The Mariners broke the record for most home runs in consecutive games to in the sixth inning when Dee Gordon hit his first home run of the season. He was the last Mariner position player to hit a home run.

The Mariners were able not to allow the Royals to score in the bottom of the 9th. In the 10th inning, the red hot Daniel Vogelbach hit a home run to win the game for the Mariners 7 to 6 now giving the Mariners a 13-2 record. I read later the last time the Mariners swept the Royals on the road in a four-game series was no other than 2001. I am sure it is too early to imagine 116 win season but who knows it might happen.

Mike Leake started the game for the Mariners. He didn't do as well in this game as he had done in his previous two starts. He went only five innings giving up five hits and four runs. Also, he gave up three home runs that gave the Royals those four runs.

Erik Swanson making his major league debut after being called up to replace reliever Chasen Bradford who went on the 10-day injured list came in as the second reliever. He gave up the other two run on three hits. They were both earned but some fielding miscues helped along the way as well. I am sure he was hoping for a better outcome however the Mariners still won and that is what counts.

Connor Sadzeck recorded the save pitching the tenth inning. It was his first in a Mariner uniform and the sixth Mariner pitcher to record a save this season so far.

The Mariners now come home to face the Houston Astros. We are hoping the Mariner magic can continue against the Astros. They will face the Cleveland Indians at home after the Astros as well.

Friday night Wade LeBlanc will start for the Mariners against former Mariner Wade Miley. Felix Hernandez is expected to pitch on Saturday followed by Marco Gonzales going for his fifth win already on the season. Go M's.

Mariners Win Another One

Wednesday night the Seattle Mariners won again along with the hitting at least one home run in a game. This time the home run came off the bat of Mitch Haniger that put the Mariners ahead in the ninth inning that led to their twelve win on the season. The home run was the only one hit in this game by the Mariners.

Roenis Elias came in the bottom of the 9th inning to record the save. It wasn't easy though he did get the first two outs easy. The Royals were able to get the bases loaded but he was able to get the batter to pop out to end the threat and have the victory. The final score was Seattle 6 Kansas City 5.

Yusei Kikuchi was able to go six innings in this game his fourth start of the season. He gave up three runs with two coming on solo home runs in the second and third innings. He walked only one batter while striking out three.

The Mariners were leading five to three when Kikuchi left the game but Matt Festa wasn't able to hold the lead giving up two runs in two/thirds of an inning. Zach Rosscup and Anthony Swarzak each pitch two/thirds of an inning as well. Swarzak was on the pitcher of record when Haniger hit his home run. It was his first win as a Mariner. Elias recorded the save his second on the season. I see Elias pitching in all different circumstances whether it is closing or coming in earlier for an inning or two.

Jay Bruce who started in left field Wednesday night in place of Santana to give him a night off had to leave the game with a sore Achilles. So Santana came in for the rest of the game. The injury isn't serious, however, I wouldn't be surprised if the Mariners give Santana the day off on Thursday since it is a day game.

Daniel Vogelbach who has been hot lately didn't get a hit in the game however he did get an RBI on a sacrifice fly. This is something the Mariners have been able to do well so far on the season.

In triple-A action in Tacoma, Shed Long hit a walk-off home run for the Rainiers to win 7-5 over Fresno. He was 4-4 for the night. He continues hitting well I wouldn't be surprised to see Long up in the first half of the season in Seattle. It is nice to know the Mariners have good depth in Tacoma in case of injuries.

Mariners Continue On

It is hard to know what next to say but I am not complaining now they are 11-2. They continue hitting a home run or more in every game. It didn't take long as Jay Bruce hit a home run in the first inning. The only surprise in this game they only scored six runs. The Final was Seattle 6  Kansas City 3.

Actually scoring six runs wasn't the only surprise now thinking more about it. Marco Gonzales who now is 4-0, along with relievers Brandon Brennan and Anthony Swarzak didn't give up a home run. So far on the season, the Mariner pitchers haven't given up many home runs which in the past has been a big occurrence.

The Kansas City Royals tied the game in the bottom of the first after Jay Bruce's home run in the top of the first. By the way, Bruce's home run was the only one of the game for the Mariners however it did keep the streak alive having at least one home run in all thirteen games so far.

The Mariners took the lead in the third inning with one run than Kansas City scored again the bottom of the third. The Mariners scored two runs in the fourth and seventh innings each. The Royals scored their final run in the seventh inning.

Marco Gonzales now has four wins on the season without a loss. He continues to do a fine job for the Mariners. The box score showed Gonzales going six innings however the run in the seventh inning did go to him. Brennan came in for Gonzales in the seventh inning. He went two innings giving up a hit and a walk.  Swarzak pitched the ninth inning getting his second save.

Although the Mariners are still working bullpen by committee Brennan and Swarzak look like a good combo to pitch the eighth and ninth inning. I expect we won't see Brennan in Wednesday night's game because he went two innings however we could see Swarzak in the closer role again.  I believe all this work out for the long run but I am sure manager Scott Servais is looking at matchups.  Neither Brennan or Swarzak have given up a run either. Of course, it is a small sample.

The news came out before the game Chasen Bradford who came for two innings in Monday night's game for Felix had to go on the 10-day injured list for inflammation in his shoulder. The Mariners recalled  Erik Swanson from Tacoma. He was one of the players the Mariners acquired in the trade from the New York Yankees for James Paxton. I expect right now he will be used in long relief but who knows for sure.

Daniel Vogelbach started once again Tuesday at DH as Mitch Haniger had the day off. So Vogelbach, Encarnacion, and Bruce all were in the lineup. Though he didn't get a home run Vogelbach still continues hitting well having three hits in Tuesday's game. He had two doubles and a single.  Heath Fillmyer a right-hander will be starting Wednesday night's game for the Royals so I expect Vogelbach will be in the game. It is possible they will rest left-fielder Domingo Santana in this game and put Jay Bruce in left. At least for now, Vogelbach looks like the everyday DH.  Go M's.

Mariners Win Big In Kansas City

The Seattle Mariners continue beating up other teams especially the starting pitchers.  The game though started off with the Royals scoring two runs off of Felix Hernandez in the first inning. Felix was hit near the knee cap with the ball going up the middle. He finished the inning, however, the Mariners brought in reliever Chasen Bradford in the second. I figured it was for precaution but we found out later that Felix had the flu. Not a great way to spend your #33 birthday either.

The Mariners tied the game at 2 in the top of the second inning when Daniel Vogelbach hit his fifth home run of the season, and three batters later Dylan Moore playing at shortstop hit his first major league home run the ball going 432 feet.

Bradford gave up a run in both the second and third inning to give the Royals a 4-2 lead. The Mariners tied the game again in the fifth inning with two runs off starter Homer Bailey.

The Mariners broke open the game in the sixth inning scoring eight runs. Edwin Encarnacion had two home runs in the inning giving him four home runs on the season. The second home run was the big one because the Mariners had two runs on base at the time. Bailey left the game for the Royals in the sixth inning after giving up three of the eight runs. So his line score showed five innings, eight hits, seven runs all earned, two walks, seven strikeouts and giving up three home runs. At the end of the sixth inning, the Mariners were leading 12-4.

Roenis Elias relieved Bradford in the fourth inning and he pitched three innings giving up no hits, walking one batter and striking out four. He was given the win in the game.

Connor Sadzeck making his second appearance went two innings giving up no runs or hits or walks while striking out two. Jay Bruce who hadn't had a hit in the game hit a home run in the eighth inning for his team-leading sixth of the season.

Cory Gearrin who has been struggling on the mound so far pitched the ninth inning for the Mariners. He continues having control issues. He gave up a run on two hits and a walk. Final score Mariners 12 Royals 5.

Other news Shawn Armstrong on the injured list is doing a rehab assignment with the triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. He pitched one inning for the Rainiers on Monday night. The Mariners expect him to pitch one more time before being recalled. Most likely his return will be on Friday when the Mariners come home to face the Houston Astros so the Mariners will have to make room in the bullpen.

Mariners Keep Blasting Away

The Seattle Mariners now have won another series winning the last two games over the Chicago White Sox. The Mariners beat the White Sox Sunday afternoon 12-5 after Saturday's win 9-2. Hadn't been for a blown save Friday night the Mariners would have swept the series.

Edwin Encarnacion and Daniel Vogelbach were the two big bats on Sunday.  Encarnacion played first place in place of Jay Bruce giving him a day off and Vogelbach at DH. Encarnacion had a home run in the 4th inning. This was after the Mariners scored six runs in the 3rd inning. He had three hits in the game and drove in four runs.

Vogelbach had a bigger game hitting a double in the 3rd inning than a two-run homer in the fifth and another homer in the ninth inning. The three hits by Vogelbach gave him six runs batted in for the game.  Centerfielder Mallex Smith had a couple hits while scoring two runs and Domingo Santana did the same along with driving in a run in as well.

The Mariners caused another starter to leave the game early as Ivan Nova left in the third inning giving up seven runs on seven hits. He left with one out. Three of the White Sox relievers gave up the other five runs. The White Sox used five relievers in all.

Now the Mariners go to Kansas City to play the Royals for four games starting on Monday. Felix Hernandez will be making his second start for the Mariners.

The way Vogelbach is hitting right now we will likely see Jay Bruce play some outfield giving Santana, Haniger, and Smith a day off. I would not be surprised if the Mariners give Bruce two chances in the outfield in the Royals series at least.

Wade LeBlanc recorded his second victory going six innings giving up six hits and two runs. He walked only one batter while striking out six.

Matt Festa came in for LeBlanc in the seventh inning. He didn't fare so well like he did in his previous outings. Fortunately, the Mariners had the large lead in this one. He gave up three runs on three runs and two walks. He did strike out the last batter to finish the inning. I expect the game being closer he would have been taken out before finishing the inning. I expect Festa will rebound in his next outing.

Chasen Bradford gave up one hit in the eighth inning without giving up a run. Anthony Swarzak made his second time out of the bullpen after coming off the injured list pitched the ninth inning taking the White Sox batters fast and easy.  He threw 12 pitches getting all three batters and striking out one. He looks like someone who will help the Mariner bullpen in a fine way. It will be interesting to see if he ends up pitching again tomorrow in Kansas City. I am sure Servais will look to see if he can go two days in a row.

Tim Beckham had to leave the game early because of his hamstring. Utility player Dylan Moore took his spot. We will have to see if Beckham returns tomorrow or whether Mariners give him a full game off. We will update on Beckham on Monday.

Mariners Lose Opener in Chicago

The Seattle Mariners had a rough start in the opening game in the series against the Chicago White Sox on the road losing 10-8. In part, it was defense well as pitching.

Yusei Kikuchi had a rough start in part of his own doing well as the defense which so far has struggled despite the fact the Mariners are 7-2. The White Sox scored three runs in both the first and second inning after Domingo Santana hit a home run in the first inning for his 4th of the early season.

Despite the awful start Kikuchi was able to pitch five innings. He had only one walk with four strikeouts plus giving up seven hits. Of the six runs, four of them were earned which is exactly now his ERA.

The Mariners scored a run in the third inning well as two in the fourth inning to get within two. Daniel Vogelbach playing again instead of Encarnacion hit the second home run in as many days. The Mariners were able to go ahead in the 6th inning. Ryon Healy hit a two-run homer to tie the game then Mitch Haniger hit another two-run homer to go up 8-6.

Matt Festa coming in for Kikuchi did a fine job in the sixth inning just giving up a walk without a hit or a run. In the seventh inning though Cory Gearrin for the second game in a row had a hard time getting the ball over the plate. He walked two batters well as hit one too that led to three runs scored though he didn't give up a hit. He is having to improve if he expects to stay in the Mariners bullpen. Manager Scott Servais was asked after the game if Gearrin was hurt and his reply was no.

Left-handed specialist Zach Rosscup came in for Gearrin giving up a run and a walk. It helped in Gearrin getting three runs to him. Rosscup was only able to get one out. Chasen Bradford replaced Rosscup to get the remaining two outs in the seventh well as going the full eighth inning. Bradford gave up a home run to shortstop Tim Anderson in the eighth.  Former Mariner Alex Colome was credited for the save in the game for the White Sox.

Mike Leake will pitch for the Mariners on Saturday. Oh, by the way, all three games are day games. This will be Leake's second start of the season. he beat the Red Sox in his first outing. Wade LeBlanc will start Sunday and Felix Hernandez will start on Monday in the first game against the Royals in Kansas City. Though it hasn't been announced expect Marco Gonzales will start the second game in K.C.  Go M's.

One More Day

I guess you could say it was good the Mariners didn't have a game scheduled in Chicago for Friday because on Wednesday it was announced that Thursday's game was moved to Friday because of rain forecasted for Thursday. We just hope that rain doesn't stay around for Friday.

Yusei Kikuchi is still scheduled to pitch now on Friday instead of Thursday for the Mariners. I am not sure whether I like the game canceled or not. Having a game moved to Friday an off day originally is a good thing?

Having two days off so early in the season seems so odd anyway but if there is rain than we could say it is good. Another thing Edwin Encarnacion was taken out before Tuesday's game started so it will help that he has an extra day to get healthy.

I am sure there are those wondering why Daniel Vogelbach isn't playing more baseball? I figure the Mariners are wanting to give Encarnacion and Jay Bruce enough at-bats where one of them can be traded sooner than later.  Right now Encarnacion is batting .238 with one home run but he could get hot any time. Bruce is hitting only .179 but does have three home runs. Vogelbach will get his chance if and when one of those two gets traded or is not hitting their weight. Bruce will play in the outfield on occasion to give Domingo Santana, Mitch Haniger, or Mallex Smith a day off. He already played once giving Smith a day off since he didn't have a lot of spring training time.

I get amazed where the local sports radio shows spent a lot of time talking about the Seahawks. I know there are those who care only about football and what to listen about the Seahawks all the time but this is baseball season. I feel sorry for those who don't appreciate baseball or basketball or soccer for that matter. When I tune in and they are talking football I change the channel. I know they don't need to talk a lot about baseball but some about the Mariners would be nice though I know enough about the team that I don't really need to listen I could say the same about football. It must be the entertaining value I guess?

Speaking of football the question is right now Russell Wilson wants to sign a new contract and has set a date of April 15.  Please Seahawks do it now so I don't have to hear any more about for the next eleven days. It will be interesting to see who the Seahawks draft this year. I am sure they trade down to get additional draft picks. Right now they have like four. Next year they have eleven so they could trade some of them to add this year.

College football the Washington Huskies and Washington State Cougars will be having spring practice and the spring game will be at the end of the month. Both teams will be going with new quarterbacks. It will be interesting to see who ends up getting the job.

Anyway be back with baseball only tomorrow unless something big breaks tomorrow.
