Mariners Take On The Giants

The Seattle Mariners take on the San
Francisco Giants Tuesday and Wednesday
in San Francisco. The Giants like the
Mariners have done well lately. Like the
Mariners they are in third place as well
in the National League West. They do
have a better record at 21-21 while the
Mariners are 19-22. Looking for a good
series though brief.

Ljay Newsome will be making his second

start for the Mariners. It has been a while

his last start was on August 27. He hasn't

pitched for a while primarily with the series

against the Oakland A's was postponed. 

In his first start for the Mariners he went 

four innings. He looked good giving up 

just one run on a homer. In his two app-

earances as a Mariner he hasn't walked

a batter. His first appearance out of the

bullpen he gave up one run a homer as 

well going three inning.

Newsome is showing he does go after 

the hitters with good control. The chances

he does give up some home runs. The key

like any pitcher is not to have runners on

base. Since he doesn't walk many the other

team has to get hits before someone gets a

home run. 

This series we hope the pitching stays well

as it has recently with some offense along 

the way. 

Marco, Dylan Lead Mariners

The Seattle Mariners continue to win
sweeping the Texas Rangers once again.
The Mariners ended the series against
the Rangers going 8-2.

Marco didn't go the distance like in his

last outing but did go seven innings giving

up two runs on four hits. He didn't walk

any batters and struck out seven. He only

has four walks on the season. His two runs

all came in the fourth inning. The Mariners

were up 3-2 going into the bottom of the

fourth. 

The Mariners scored five runs in the 

fourth inning. Dylan Moore hit a double

to clear the bases in the fourth. He hit

a home run in the previous inning. He

had four rbi's on the day.

Kyle Seager had a good game hitting a

home run once again. I am sure the 

Rangers are glad not to see him the rest

of the season. Actually any members of

the Mariners.

News came out long time Cougar broadcaster

Bob Robertson past away. He not only did

football and basketball for the Cougars he

did a little Mariner baseball too. His son

Bob Jr went to school with my brother Jack.

I remember growing up listening to him.

Baseball great Lou Brock passed away as

well. I enjoyed watching him and the great

St. Louis Cardinals teams. He and Bob

both will be missed.

The Mariners will be off to play the San

Francisco Giants Tuesday and Wednesday.

They will Thursday off before going to

Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks over

the weekend. The Mariners back home next

Monday to play the Oakland A's in a double-

header to make up the two games last week

that were postponed. Enjoy your week of

Seahawk Sign 14 To Practice Squad

Before getting to the players the Seahawks signed to 

the practice squad it is interesting none of the players 

waived were not signed by other teams. The Seahawks 

expected to be one of the top teams in the league you 

think other teams would be interested in a few players 

away. 

The Seahawks added a waiver player themselves
picking up outside linebacker D 'Andre Walker from
Tennessee Titans.

The popular linebacker Shaquem Griffin is at the top

 of the list. Quarterback Danny Etling looks to have 

beaten out former WSU quarterback Anthony Gordon.

There are five receivers in former Husky Aaron Fuller, 

Penny Hart, Lance Lenoir, Stephen Sullivan and Cody 

Thompson, two tackles Tommy Champion, Chad Wheeler

and tight end Tyler Mabry on the offense.

Besides Griffin on the defense are defensive backs

Gavin Heslop, Ryan Neal, Jayson Stanley, and

defensive tackle Cedric Lattimore.

The Seahawks will have two more spots to fill.

Dunn and the Mariners Make It Three

The Seattle Mariners have done well recently
they are in the race for the playoffs. If they
continue winning more than losing they might
make it.

Recently they have been beating teams that

are struggling. It is important thing to do if

you want to go anywhere.

The Mariners behind the pitching of Justin

Dunn and the hitting of Kyle Seager and Lewis.

Seager hit a home run in the first inning to put

the Mariners up 2-0. Seager's home run put him

ahead of Jay Buhner on Mariner list. Lewis 

hit a home run in the 4th put the Mariners up

3-1.

Justin Dunn was able to go six innings giving

up two runs both on solo homers. He did struggle

walking four batters but did strike four as well.

Dunn's confidence is increasing with each outing.

The Mariners made it a two run lead in the seventh

inning when Shed Long drove in a run. The Rangers

hit a home run in the 9th off of Hirano but the Mariners

were able to win 4-3.

The Mariners will see they can sweep the Rangers

for the second time in a row. The Mariners are now

three games behind the struggling Astros who have

injuries to their pitching staff. 

The Mariners have won seven out of their last ten

games. The Mariners are ahead of the LA Angels

by two games. The Angels have been playing good

ball as well winning seven games in the same stretch

as the Mariners. They don't play each other the rest

of the way.

Marco Gonzales starts Monday afternoon before both

teams head out of town. Gonzales anything close to his

last outing the Mariners have a good chance to sweep.

The Mariners go to take on the Giants in San Francisco.

The Seattle Seahawks have signed 14 players to the 

practice squad. They can have 16 total. I will let you

know who on the squad tomorrow morning. Clowney

signed with Tennessee so he won't be back to Seattle.

 

Justus Sheffield Beats Texas Rangers

Justus Sheffield having control trouble in his
previous start had little trouble getting the ball
over the plate Saturday against the struggling
Texas Rangers.

Sheffield was able to go seven innings giving up

two run on eight hits. He had one walk while 

striking out six batters. His two-seam fastball

was working well the Rangers hitters grounded

out eight times. He gave up a solo home run

in the seventh inning. The game was tied at 2-2

when he left the game so unfortunately he didn't

record the victory.

Joey Gerber who relieved Sheffield recorded the

victory. Ty France made his second start coming

over from San Diego played second base. He had

two hits plus scoring and driving in a run. Catcher

Luis Torrens in his second start had his first hit

as a Mariner on the night.

Phillip Ervin making his first start in right field

drove in one of the three runs in the eighth inning.

Jake Fraley was sent down to make room for Ervin.

The Mariners had acquired Ervin on waivers from

the Cincinnati Reds. Expect him to start in the outfield

against lefties for the most part.

Justin Dunn who had an outstanding start in his last

outing surrendering one hit and no runs will be on the

mound Sunday afternoon. Since it is an afternoon game

expect Joe Odom to be behind the plate.

Marco Gonzales is expected to start Monday's final

game against the Rangers. His last outing he went 

all the way. Regardless how the Mariners do the rest

of this series they have at least tied the series winning

the first two games. The Mariners are now 17-22

in third place two games ahead of the LA Angels. 

The Mariners don't play the Angels the rest of the 

regular season. 

I know many Mariner fans would like the team to 

tank it to get a better draft pick in next year's draft,

however, this does show they are making progress

in their rebuilding process and that is the point isn't

it. 

The Mariners are strong in pitching in their farm

system along with outfielder prospects so drafting

an infielder in the first round would be nice but

we will take whoever the top player is going in.

A Look At Seahawks Initial Opening Season Roster

The Seattle Seahawks could have changes the
season starts on September 13 against the Atlanta
Falcons but here is the roster right now.

At Quarterback; Russell Wilson and Geno Smith.

Former WSU quarterback Anthony Gordon will 

likely be on the practice squad. 

Running backs: Chris Carson, Carlo Hyde, Travis

Homer and rookie DeeJay Dallas. Rashaad Penny

will start the season on the injured list.

Wide Receivers: Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Phillip

Dorsett all three expected, David Moore, rookie

Freddie Swain and 2nd yr John Ursua There was

talk around Moore maybe released than brought

back at a lower salary. Josh Gordon the Seahawks

just signed is still on suspension list. Might be

activated before the first game or have to wait 

for a few weeks as well.

Tight End: It looks like the Seahawks are going to

begin the season with four tight ends. Greg Olsen,

Will Dissly, Jacob Hollister and Luke Willson. 

Offensive Line: left tackle Duane Brown, left guard

Mike Iupati, center/guard Ethan Pocic, right guard

Damien Lewis rookie out of LSU, right tackle Brandon

Shell. The following are the backups in BJ Finney

the Seahawks signed as a free agent during the off-season,

Phil Haynes, Jordan Simmons, Jamarco Jones and 

Cedric Ogbuehi.

Defensive Line: last year's number one pick LJ Collier,

Rasheem Green, free agent signee Benson Mayowa,

Damontre Moore, Albert Robinson, Poona Ford, Bryan

Mone, and Jarran Reed. 

Linebackers: Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, Bruce Irvin,

Cody Barton, 1st round pick Jordyn Brooks, and former

Husky Ben Burr-Kirven. Shaquem  Griffin rookie last

year didn't make the roster. He passes through waivers 

he will likely be on the practice squad. I am sure it was

a tough decision to drop Griffin.

Cornerback: Shaquill Griffin, Tre Flowers, Quinton Dunbar

acquired from Washington who had trouble off the field 

during the off-season, Neiko Thorpe, and Linden Stephens.

Safety: no surprise Jamal Adams, Quandre Diggs picked up 

during last season, 2nd year Marquise Blair expected to play

some nickel, Ugo Amadi might play nickel to and Lano Hill. 

Specialists: as expected punter Michael Dickson his third 

season, placer kicker Jason Myers, and long snapper Tyler

Ott.

Mariners Win Friday Night

The Seattle Mariners beat the Texas
Rangers in the opening game of the
series Friday night 6-3.

The game was a tight one for most
of the game. Yusei Kikuchi pitched
a fine game going six innings giving
up two hits including a home run in
the fifth inning. Kikuchi didn't walk
a batter while striking out seven.

The Mariners were leading 3-1 at

Kikuchi's departure. Kendall Graveman

making his first appearance on in 

relief  pitched an inning striking out

one Ranger. He looked good with his

fastball reaching the upper 90s. At that

rate he should do a good job out of the

bullpen. 

Lefty Anthony Misiewicz came in 

took care of the eight inning. Found 

out on the Roots broadcast he and

Yohan Ramirez are the only relievers

on the Mariners who started the season

on the roster. 

Going into the bottom of the eighth 

inning the score still 3-1, however,

JP Crawford hit a three-run homer 

to put the Mariners up 6-1.

It was a good thing Yoshihisa Hirano

gave up two runs in the top of the 

9th inning to make it interesting. So

final score Mariners 6 Rangers 3.

Dylan Moore made his return to the

Mariner lineup coming off the injured

list getting two hits. A double to right

and a single up the first base line the

pitcher couldn't handle. 

Moore was playing second base. Right now it 

looks like he will be the regular second base

dislodging Shed Long from the spot. Long

is still expected to play some but could be

playing in different spots. Long is still 

considered part of the rebuilding process,

however. Moore is the second baseman for

now. This could depend on how other

players are doing as well.

Both Ty France and Luis Torrens made

their Mariner debut with France at dh

while Torrens at catcher. France had

a hit in the game along with scoring a

run and driving in a run as well. Torrens

didn't get a hit. He will try to see if he

can get his first Mariner hit Saturday 

nigh against the Rangers.

Justus Sheffield will take the mound 

Saturday night. He and the Mariners

are hoping he will perform better than

he did in his last outing where he struggled
