Spring training is five weeks away from happening. It has been a slow off-season for the Mariners as far as acquiring players unlike last season.
When it comes to starting pitching the Mariners don't have much depth there. The rotation right now looks like Marco Gonzales, Yusei Kikuchi, a newcomer to the Mariners anyway veteran free-agent signee Kendall Graveman, Justus Sheffield and Justin Dunn.
Right now the Mariners don't have anyone else on the forty-man roster to step in. There are two pitchers Erik Swanson who started some games last year but the Mariners like him for the bullpen and Ricardo Sanchez who is 22 years old and hasn't pitched above double-A ball.
The Mariners are looking to acquire another pitcher like Kendall Graveman who is coming off a season where he was injured looking to bounce back. This is what the Mariners are looking for to sign over the next five weeks.
If all the five starters are ready to go and healthy the Mariners will have someone that will pitch long relief out of the bullpen ready to step in at any time. They could sign one or two veterans who would start in triple-A as well as being ready at any time.
So we will see who the Mariners will get over the weeks ahead. The Mariners are hoping Logan Gilbert first-round pick in 2018 will be ready to join the rotation sometime during the season and 2019 top pick George Kirby be ready sometime next season. The Mariners drafted nine pitchers in 2019 in the first ten rounds so someone from that group will be ready in 2021 as well though I see more likely in 2022.
I will be keeping an eye on how those guys are doing throughout the season. Go M's.
