It didn't take long for the Washington State Cougars to name their new head football coach after Mike Leach became head coach at Mississippi State.
The new coach is Nick Rolovich who comes to Pullman, Washington from Hawaii. Talk about a different climate especially late in the football season. He is reported to have signed a five-year deal to coach the Cougars. It doesn't mean a lot since Leach had recently signed an extension only a short time before leaving Pullman.
Rolovich's offense won't look a lot different than Leach's since he is expected to throw the ball a lot as well. I am sure there will be some differences in their offenses. I am sure the terminology will be different but the ball will be thrown for sure.
Last year's quarterback Anthony Gordon was a senior so he won't be returning. The Cougars do have several quarterbacks expected to compete for the starting spot. It will be interesting if any of them will transfer or Rolovich will bring in a quarterback of his own. The turnover at quarterback might not be drastic since they will continue throwing the ball. It may all depend on the style of quarterback Rolovich likes compared to Leach.
The quarterbacks listed on the Cougars roster going into spring are redshirt junior John Bledsoe son of Drew who made his name at WSU before having a long career in the NFL, Cameron Cooper redshirt sophomore out of Lehi, Utah, two redshirt freshmen in Gunner Cruz and Aaron Angelos. Having been around the longest Bledsoe you would think would have the edge; however, we will see when spring ball is over. Best to Rolovich and the Cougars.
