Amazing One Stroke Victory

The greatest single sports event here in Western Washington at Chamber’s Bay Golf and Country Club came down to one stroke.

I know that there have critical statements about the greens on the course; however, the final came down to excitement. I thought for sure Dustin Johnson would make his last shot for the tournament to go into overtime tomorrow morning. I know that Jordan Spieth was thinking the same thing. In fact, he had shock on his face.

I am sure most of us would have enjoyed having another day of golf; however, it was not meant to be. Despite the fact the greens were not the best that the golfers wanted it was a great tourna-ment with other stories that were told. Jason Day overcoming illness and following down on Friday put in heroic time to the very end. Many followers were rooting for him to win.

Today Louis Oosthulzen who had to play the first two rounds with Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler rebounded to finish tied for second in the tournament. Another great story.

I am not sure what more to say; however, I have never watched so much golf in my life. The main reason of course is that the course is only a few miles from where I live and grew up. I have spent many a time passing through this area over the years. A friend of mine who is preparing for a bike ride from Seattle to Portland which is the weekend after the fourth of July went right by the course in his preparation. I am sure he stopped for a few moments to see what was going on.

This tournament even with its flaws will be remembered by all here attended Chamber’s Bay and those who watched it on television. We can only hope that Chamber’s Bay will get a PGA tournament or we will see that the U.S. Open will return again in a few years. I am sure they will work on the greens for next time. The lack of rain probably did not help either. Usually it rains here this time of the year.

In other local sports the Mariners beat the Houston Astros two out of three games. They did have a chance to sweep the Astros before losing today.

I hope that we don’t hear any more complaints about the greens; however, I am sure we will for a while. Maybe with the next major British Open coming up soon I am sure complaints will come again. Chamber’s Bay is probably the closest golf course to that being played at St. Andrew’s Scotland.

I am not sure how much golf I will be seeing the rest of the year but likely won’t be as much that I saw this weekend. Since I have ancestors that lived in Scotland, and England I am sure I will have some interest in the tournament. Depending how things go most likely I will primarily watch the action on the Sunday.

So to end it all Go Chamber’s Bay and the Mariners!
