Mariners Take Two in Anaheim

The Seattle Mariners had a good short trip to Anaheim to take on the Angels. As we hoped for they took two out of three from the Angels. They had an offense machine scoring ten runs on Friday along with a shutout performed by Ariel Miranda in a 10-0. On Saturday night they were unable to score any runs losing 4-0 however did recover on Sunday winning 5-3 which included a three run homer by Robinson Cano in the top of the eighth inning.

James Paxton pitched six and a third inning giving up one run on two hits. He looked great where he was pitching a no-hitter going into the ninth inning. Steve Cishek replaced him in the seventh inning throwing just one pitch that ended in a double play. Nick Vincent pitched one-third of an inning in the eighth inning. He gave up two runs on four hits. He didn’t look good however he has had a pretty good season in the most part. The problem at this point the bullpen needs to do well when they have a 5-1 lead going into the eighth. He looked so shaky I wasn’t sure that the Mariners would win. Left hand specialist Marc Rzepczynski got the second out and then Edwin Diaz came in to finish off the eighth and the ninth inning for the Mariners. Of his four outs two of them by Diaz were strike outs so he was looking really good once again. We hope that he can have a real good July to help out the Mariners to go into August where they will be playing most of the time on the road.

We hope that Paxton now will be what he was earlier in the season before he went on the disabled list. It would be nice to have two number one pitchers or number two anyway. King Felix returns on the mound in late afternoon game on July 4th. Tonight July 3rd  Andrew Moore will make his second start for the Mariners. The Mariners will need to make a roster move since Moore had been sent back down to Tacoma last week. The Mariners haven’t made that announcement yet. It could be Boog Powell who was brought up Sunday to play for Nelson Cruz. Right now Cruz is day to day however he was named to the All-Star roster as a reserve. He is the only one on the team from the Mariners.

Other news Ben Gamel is leading the American League in batting however Jean Segura who had four hits on Sunday that included driving the first two runs in for the Mariners has a higher average than Gamel but doesn’t qualify with enough at bats.

Outside of Cano the rest of the middle of the batting order had no hits. Mitch Haniger batted for in the place of Cruz who didn’t play in the game followed by Kyle Seager and Danny Valencia who had no hits either.  Guillermo Heredia who started in center field had no hits but scored a run. He had only one official at bat because he walked three times.  In an odd move the Mariners pitched run Jarrod Dyson in place of Heredia. I would have thought the Mariners have waited until Mike Zunino had finished his at bat.  Zunino had no hits and struck out twice in four official at bats. Boog Powell who replaced Cruz as designated hitter had two hits and scored a run batted ninth.

The Mariners face Ian Kennedy for the Royals in Monday night’s game in the beginning of a three game series. Kennedy has struggled with a 2-6 record and an era of 4.72. The Mariners should be favored in this game but as we know the Mariners don’t always do well when facing a mediocre pitcher. Sometimes they make that pitcher look like Cy Young.  It would be good if the Mariners can win the first game of a three game series against the Royals. Go M’s.
