With Earl Thomas not being at mini-camp and a good chance not
at training camp unless he gets a new contract or is traded the Seahawks are
now looking at the other guys who may have a lot of playing time. Kam
Chancellor is not in training camp as well however his return is in doubt
because of neck injury that happened at the end of last season. He is expected
to take some tests to see if he is able to perform or not.
Bradley McDougald is the one who has the most experience of
the safeties in camp. He has played both safety spots in place of Earl Thomas
and Kam Chancellor. What is known right now that McDougald will start this
season but which spot is in question though he can play either one the Seahawks
prefer him in strong safety that has
been Chancellor’s spot. If Chancellor is able to return than McDougald then
will be at Thomas’s position. Of course if Thomas returns along with Chancellor
than he will back up at both positions.
Other listed players at free safety are Alex Carter out of
Stanford who was signed to the Seahawks practice squad at the end of 2017, T.J.
Mutcherson who the Seahawks signed as a free agent out of Central Florida, and Tedric
Thompson the Seahawks drafted last year in the 4th round and played
in nine games for them.
The strong safeties that are vying for spots on the Seahawks
are Maurice Alexander, who started last season for the Los Angeles before being
waived, and Delano Hill a third round
pick in 2017 by the Seahawks and the likely replacement for Chancellor.
At this point Hill has to be the favorite to play in place of
Chancellor while McDougald will be in Thomas spot. The other free safeties the
Seahawks have in camp look more like being backups. If Thomas doesn’t come back
I would not be surprised if the Seahawks go find an experienced free safety
that might be on the market.
Without Chancellor and or Thomas the secondary will not be
the same that the Seahawks have known since they both came on the scene. In
fact Seahawks defense can still be good but not where it has been since
they have to replace Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett on the defensive line as
well. Go Hawks!!
