Third and final day of draft

The Seattle Mariners have completed the final
day of the college draft with ten picks which
include six pitchers so a look at what they
accomplished on Tuesday.

#11 William Fleming a right-handed pitcher

out of Wake Forest. William has a good

fastball up to 99 miles per hour. He has a

good slider as well but has to work on his

curve and changeup. William has a good

upside so see how it goes. The Mariners

have had pitchers make the ball club in

this part of the draft before so wish him

the best.

#12 Corey Rosier, a left-handed hitting

center fielder from UNC Greensboro.

Corey is only 5’10 but has had some pop

in his bat having 12 home runs this season

and has stolen 17 bases as well.

#13 Ben Ramirez shortstop University of

Southern California. Ramirez is 6’3 so the

Mariners could end up moving him to third

base though they do have several players

there in the system already.

#14 Andrew Moore, right-handed pitcher

from Chipola junior college. Like Fleming

he throws the ball hard. With the amount

of starters the Mariners have in the farm

system he may have to work his way up

as a reliever but the Mariners might begin

with him as a starter. These six pitchers in

this draft could be relievers instead of

starters depending on how their secondary

pitches work out.

#15 Cole Barr third baseman out of Indiana

University. He is a right-handed hitter unlike

the Mariners have drafted in previous seasons.

Barr does have power though recently has

been working on other areas of his game.

The other third basemen in the Mariners farm

system have been drafted higher than Barr so

he has a lot to get ahead of.

#16 Jimmy Joyce Jr.  right-handed pitcher

out of Hofstra University. Joyce is the first of

three pitchers drafted in a row. Joyce throws

in the low 90s so it will be important for him to

do well on his secondary pitches to make it

to the majors.

#17 Jimmy Kingsbury, right-handed pitcher from

Villanova. He doesn't have a lot on his fastball

either so he will have to depend on his secondary

pitches as well. It wouldn’t be easy for him to

make the Mariners in the years to come, however,

Ljay Newsome who was on the staff last year well

as this season before being injured throws in the

low 90s. Newsome has both started and relieved

though looks good coming out of the bullpen.

Newsome was a #25 round pick so you never

know.

#18 Riley Davis, right-handed pitcher from

Alabama-Birmingham. Davis threw three

complete games this year so he can go the

distance if necessary and he is pitching well.

Davis began his career as a reliever in college

but this year he showed he can be a starter.

We will see where he ends up.

#19 Charley Welch catcher out of Arkansas.

Welch was used as a pinch-hitter when not

catching. He showed that he has a lot of power

from the right side hitting massive home runs.

I am sure the Mariners are looking to see what

they can do with this power catcher.

#20 Troy Taylor, right-handed pitcher from

Cypress Junior College. Taylor can throw the

ball up to 95 miles an hour. Also, has a lot of

movement on all his pitches. We will see how

he does this summer and next few seasons.

So this was the 2021 draft for the Seattle

Mariners. They took a few high schoolers

before going back to the college ranks. It

may take a few years to find out how they

did with this class.
