Mitch Haniger and More

Mitch Haniger accepted his $17
million player option on Monday.
Matt Brash, fellow pitchers Jackson
Kowar and Blas Castono along
with Sam Haggerty were activated
to the 40- man roster who filled it
right now. Brash likely won't be ready
until next  June likely. Kowar out
most of last year to and Castano
pitched in both double A and triple
A for the Mariners. Haggerty was
hurt while playing for Tacoma. He
is eligible for arbitration so the
Mariners could leave him or put
him on waivers like they did for
Luis Urias.

The Mariners will have to reduce
the roster if they make a trade that
involves acquiring more than one
player or they sign a free agent or
pick up off waivers. Also if they have to
add someone they don't want to lose
to rule five draft in December.

The Mariners have 23 pitchers and
17 position players on the roster.
Usually they carry 20 pitchers and
20 position players. Most likely
the first to be taken off is a pitcher
unless the player they want to add
is a position and they are willing
to drop one.

Right now you have to figure Haniger
will be on the opening day roster
unless they are willing to cut that
much payroll and still pay him. They
could trade him however the other
team probably won't want to pay the
full amount. On the team Mitch will
be the fourth or fifth outfielder and
dh as well.

Mitch Garver is listed on the roster
as the dh however he is right now
the teams backup catcher as he was
the second have of last season. The
Mariners don't have another catcher
so they would have to sign another
one if they want a third catcher.
Congratulations to Cal Raleigh for
winning the gold glove as a catcher
along with Dylan Moore as utility
player.  This could make him more
valuable if the Mariners wanted to
trade him which is a possibility.

The Mariners have seven infielders
and eight outfielders listed. Luke
Raley is listed as an outfielder though
he played a lot of first base in September
and is considered right
now as someone playing time next
season as well. Sam Haggerty listed
to though he could play any of the
infield spots just like Dylan Moore
is listed as an infielder but can play
the outfield too.

The Mariners didn't accept Jorge
Polanco option so they will have to
acquire one. Currently Ryan Bliss
along with Dylan Moore and Leo Rivas
would play second. The Mariners
acquire a third baseman than Josh
Rojas could play second to.

Rojas does return at third though
the Mariners look to upgrade the
position. Dylan Moore would play
as a platoon player if they don't
upgrade. Right now Raley and
Tyler Locklear could platoon at
first base unless they bring back
Justin Turner who is a free agent
and has shown interest. JP Crawford
is the shortstop with Dylan Moore
and Rivas could see action too.

Ryan Arozarena, Julio Rodriguez
and Victor Robles be the starting
rotation with Haniger and Raley
playing on occasion right now.
Dominic Canzone and Cade Marlowe
be the guys after them.

We will see what the Mariners
do over the weeks ahead. The
pitching any changes will likely
happen in the bullpen unless a
surprise happens. Go M's!
