WSU and Gonzaga Both Win

One thing both the Cougars and
the Zags have in common is an
that will score a lot of points.
It will be interesting when they
play each other in the West Coast
Conference.

The Cougars beat Portland State
100-92. The Cougars got off to a
slow start being down by 17 points.
They went on a 25-7 run to take over.
The Cougars had a eight point lead
at half time which was the difference.

The  Cougars had all five starters
score in double figures plus Isaiah
Watts coming off the bench with 20 points. I thought Watts would start
however having a player who can
score off the bench is good. He did
play 27 minutes so it is like another
starter. Rihards Vavers was the only
other guy getting playing time off
the bench going 16 minutes however
only scored one point. Vavers is
coming back from injury so his time will likely increase.  The Cougars look to go with a seven player rotation.

Cedric Coward led the Cougars with
23 points and 12 rebounds. Former
Washington Husky Nate Calmese in
his Cougar debut was third in scoring
with 17 and led with five assists.

On Friday the Cougars play Bradley.
This should be a bigger test and they
will have to get off on better start.

Gonzaga played Baylor in their
season debut. Although they played
in Spokane it wasn't on their home
court. It didn't matter as they played
well and had their faithful student
section at the game

The Zags started on a 8-1 run then
Baylor did a run of their own going
8-0 to take a temporary lead. After
that they blew out Baylor. Expected
a closer game as Baylor was ranked eight while Zags six.  The final was
Gonzaga 101 Baylor 63.

The Zags led Baylor by 19 at halftime
and outscored them again by 19 in
the second half. The Zags are not going to let up it looks like. The big
difference the Gonzaga scored thirty
more points behind the three point
line. They made 41.9 percent behind
line while Baylor shot 14.3 percent.
The Zags had easy shots as well
as they shot 57.1 percent from the
field. They dominated the defensive
boards with 29 compared to 18 by
Baylor.

Gonzaga went with an eight man
rotation most of the way with three
starters in double figures and two
off the bench. Nolan Hickman led
the Zags with 17 points. Braden Huff
who is instant offense when he usually
comes off the bench had 14 points
in 16 minutes.

Gonzaga's next outing will be at home
against Arizona State on Sunday. ASU
play their first game Tuesday night
at home against Idaho State. They
play Santa Clara Friday before facing
the Zags. See how good they are
heading into Sunday.  Go Zags!

The Washington Huskies have their season opener against UC Davis
Tuesday night. We see whether
they will win as well. It would be
nice to see all three teams have a
good season.
