The Seattle Mariners finally won a game after losing five straight
games. They beat the Washington Nationals in the final game of the three game
series after giving up a lot of runs to them in the previous two games. The
Mariners lost five in a row since they had beaten the Chicago White Sox in the
first game of the four game series against them at home.
The last game they had won Ariel Miranda who pitched a
wonderful game giving up three hits in five innings Thursday afternoon also had
beaten the White Sox in the first game in the four game series. Going into this
game the Mariners had won only three games while losing ten after having their
record come to 17-17. The Mariners record now is 21-27.
The Mariners offense that scored only one run in the previous
five games beat the Nationals on Thursday 4-2. The Mariners offense came alive
in the sixth inning on a home run by Nelson Cruz. It put the Mariners ahead
3-2. The Nationals had scored their two runs the previous inning going ahead
2-0. The Mariners made their fourth run in the seventh inning.
The Mariners bullpen did a good job giving up three hits in
four innings and did not issue a walk at all. Although he was a little wild
Edwin Diaz recorded the save.
The Mariners now go to
Fenway Park in Boston. Fenway being an offensive ball park it would be nice if
the Mariners can come more alive in this series before heading to Colorado
where we know the ball will fly.
One thing we do know is that the pitchers will need to do a
better job than they have been. At least the bullpen gave hope in the last game
in Washington shutting the Nationals out.
A positive thing the Mariners will not have to face lefty
Chris Sale who beat the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Yovani Gallardo who gave up
ten runs in his last outing for the Mariners will be facing the Red Sox on
Friday night. We hope that he does a better job and can go at least six
innings. The most important thing is that he gives the Mariners a chance to win
the game.
The Mariners will be facing Eduardo Rodrigues who has an era
of 3.10 in nine games. He has started eight of those games and has struck out
55 batters in just over 49 innings. So the Mariners will have to look at getting
the bat on the ball. He is a lefty so I expect that the Mariners will go
primarily with a right handed hitting lineup. Of course Cano and Seager should
both be in the lineup even so.
Regardless how this series goes it would be nice if the
Mariners could win this opening game against the Red Sox. The Mariners may have
James Paxton back soon since he has gone on a rehab assignment. More news on
that front could come today. Go M’s.
