Football in the Northwest

As I expected the Washington Huskies beat UCLA 31-24. I thought the game would not be as close the score turned out to be but playing on the road isn’t easy.

I was disappointed because quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson of the Bruins was able to complete 27 passes on 38 attempts for 272 yards and two touchdowns. I wasn’t impressed by the defensive backs in this game like in other games. Also Joshua Kelly was able to run 125 yards on 20 attempts with a touchdown as well. The Bruins hadn’t won a game so they had something to prove as well.

On the Huskies side Jake Browning threw for 265 yards completing 18 passes on 26 attempts with a touchdown and an interception so he had solid game along with the fact he was able to run when needed going 49 yards on 13 carries.  Myles Gaskin did have another solid game running the ball for 116 on 27 carries with two touchdowns.

Next week the Huskies will be in Eugene to take on rival northwest team Oregon Ducks. The Ducks had a bye week after beating California Bears in Berkley 42-24. The Ducks are 3-1 on the season with 1-1 in the Pac-12. The Ducks again have a mighty offense so be hard for the Huskies to go into Eugene to knock them off. I expect this will be a hard fought game.

Washington State Cougars on Saturday took on the other northwest rival in the Oregon State Beavers. As expected the Cougars beat the Beavers 56-37. The Beavers are rebuilding however they did show they can score runs along with the Cougars.  The Cougars are 2-1 in the Pac-12 tied for second with Stanford behind Washington. They have a bye next week for their turn to take on the Ducks in Pullman. I am sure that will be a fight as well. Cougars overall record is 5-1.

The Seattle Seahawks had a tough game on Sunday losing to the Los Angeles Rams in Seattle. The Rams won 33-31 however the game was closer than anyone expected. The Seahawks did have a lead on several occasions but the Rams would fight back. The Seahawks defense wasn’t as good as we have seen but the offense was better with Chris Carson running over 100 yards. The Seahawks have now found the magic way to score and that is getting back to running the ball. The Rams being the best team in the NFL right now the Seahawks showed they could play with them and likely would have beaten every other team in the league on Sunday with the same effort. Now the Seahawks get ready to leave on Wednesday for London when they take on the Oakland Raiders who are 1-4. It is important the Seahawks now 2-3 to bounce back for a win. The Rams are 5-0 so the Seahawks are three games behind them. The chances of catching the Rams are not good but must look to win out to make the playoffs. Hope to see them run the ball up and down the field in London. Go Hawks.
