Sunday Logan Gilbert's First Win

On Sunday Logan Gilbert finally won
his first major league game taking five
tries. Gilbert only pitched five innings
because he threw 105 pitches. In the
five innings he only gave up two hits,
however, walked four while striking
out seven. One of the two hits lead
of the game by Justin Upton hitting
a home run.

Gilbert is learning to throw his slider
and developing a change up to go
with his fast ball. Gilbert can throw
a curve ball as well but at this time
not so effective. Up until this game
Gilbert was relying on his fast ball
to get outs but this time his slider
and change up who he threw a lot
to left handed hitters was the reason
he had the seven strike outs along
with only two hits.  I expect in his
next outing we will see Gilbert even
more effective. We hope he will be
able to go six innings.

Oh yes by the way the final score
was 9-5. When Gilbert left the game
after five innings the Mariners were
leading 3-1.  The Mariners scored
another run in the seventh inning
then the Angels added a run in the
eighth inning. Reliever Rafael Montero
had two hits that led to the run but
found his way to get out of it. Somehow
Montero always finds a way to give
up two hits in a game whether the
other team scores or not.

The Mariners were able to add on
scoring five runs in the 9th inning.
Turned out to be a good thing because
Middleton struggled giving up three
runs before being replaced by Drew
Steckenrider.

Real irony Middleton is a former
Angel while the five runs scored
in the top of the 9th inning were
against former Mariner relievers
Hunter Strickland and Steve Cishek.

The Mariners have Monday off then
have two games in Detroit against
the Tigers followed by four against
Cleveland before coming home.
The Tigers are 5-5 in their last ten
games while the Mariners are 6-4.
Detroit is tied for last place in the
American League central division.
They have been 5-5 in their last
ten games. Hopefully we will see
a split in the two games  at the very
least. Marco Gonzales makes his
second start since coming off the
injured list.

JP Crawford continues to hit the
ball well having two doubles on
the day. Donovan Walton who
started in left field had two hits
on the day including a home run
in the third inning has his batting
average starting to creep up. Walton
is now hitting .232.

Both Jake Fraley and Jarred Kelenic
started the game with the day off
however entered the game late.
Fraley had a hit scoring a run and
driving in one to while Kelenic had
no at bat. We hope another day off
by Kelenic will allow him to start
hitting.

In other local sports Seahawks
punter Michael Dickson signed
a four year extension. It is good
to see he will stick around. A
great punter Dickson is the second
highest paid punter in the NFL.
Congratulations.
