It is very hard for any team to sweep another in a four game
series. The Mariners had the opportunity over the weekend against the Los
Angeles Angels but it wasn’t meant to be though they were close losing 4-3.
The Mariners took the first lead in the top of the third when
Mitch Haniger hit a double that scored Dee Gordon after he got on base with a
single. In the bottom of the third though Justin Upton who had a good series
against the Mariners hit a three-run homer to take 3-1 lead. The lead didn’t last long because Daniel
Vogelbach in for Nelson Cruz down with illness hit a two-run homer to tie the
game.
Marco Gonzales went five innings for the Mariners giving up
the three runs along with six hits, two walks and six strike outs. Other than
the pitch to Upton did an ok job in the game. Shawn Armstrong pitched the sixth
inning having another fine performance showing the Mariners that he could have
a spot in the bullpen next season.
The Angels won the game in the seventh inning when Kole
Calhoun hit a home run off of Nick Vincent. Calhoun is another one handful of
players who finds a way sometime during a series to beat the Mariners. The
Mariners were only able to get one hit off the Angels bullpen over four
innings. A very good reason they were not able to win the game.
The Mariners now go to Texas taking on the Astros then the
Rangers both in three game series. The Mariners have Wade LeBlanc going Monday
night followed by Mike Leake on Tuesday. Right now they don’t have anyone
scheduled for Wednesday. It is possible that James Paxton will be ready to go
then or go with Roenis Elias again. The Astros will be another tough series
because they do have outstanding starting pitching although the Mariners did
sweep them the last time in Houston. The rotation against the Rangers hasn’t
been announced as of yet. Go M’s.
