It might be too late however the Mariners did take the series
from the Baltimore Orioles in Seattle. A loss would have made it even more
difficult since the Oakland A’s beat the New York Yankees once again. A team
the Mariners will be taking on in the next series starting Friday night. Really
to make the playoffs the Mariners need to sweep the Yankees at home. It will
not be an easy task since we never know whether the offense or the pitching
will show up any given game.
Wednesday night the Mariners took the lead in the third
inning when Mitch Haniger hit his 24th home run of the season. The
Orioles scored two runs in the top the fifth inning temporarily because Nelson
Cruz and Denard Span hit back to back home runs to give the Mariners a 3-2
lead. In the seventh inning the Mariners scored two more runs when Nelson Cruz
hit a double followed by another by Span. After a wild pitch that sent Span to
third. Kyle Seager back starting this game after not on Tuesday had a pop fly
Guillermo Heredia pinch hitting for Ben Gamel had a safety bunt to score Span
making 5-2.
Mike Leake went six innings giving up seven hits. Although
two runs were scored by the Orioles both were unearned because of errors. Leake
didn’t walk a batter and struck out four. Shawn Armstrong relieved Leake giving
up one hit in his one inning followed by Alex Colome and Edwin Diaz who neither
gave up a hit. Now Diaz has fifty-three saves on the season.
James Paxton will start Friday night’s game against the
Yankees followed by Felix Hernandez on Saturday. Both of those are must game
along with Sunday. Who starts on Sunday has not been yet determined. The
Mariners have twenty-two games remaining and they are still five and a half
games behind the Oakland A’s. While the Mariners play the Yankees the A’s take
on the Texas Rangers so the odds of the Mariners still making the playoffs as a
wild card is still hard to accomplish. Go M’s.
