The Seattle Mariners win the final game of the season 3-1 over the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field. The win allowed the Mariners to have a season record of 10-9 against the Rangers. This meant they won every series against the American League West division rivals.
So the Mariners season record ended up 89-73. With the same record they would have won the division by a game in 2016 and made the 2nd wild card last year. We hope Jerry Dipoto will be able to make some trades and add free agents to the roster. Most likely they won’t go after the top free agents. Possibly the middle range free agents. They will have to decide resign Nelson Cruz to a new contract as he now will become a free agent. They need to know where they will play Dee Gordon and Robinson Cano. Gordon in center or second base and Cano at 2nd base or 1st base. They could have them go between each position as well like when Cano return in August from his suspension.
The Mariners had a different lineup for the final game. Guillermo Heredia leadoff playing centerfield, he went 2 for 4. Denard Span in left field, later replaced by Cameron Maybin, Nelson Cruz in right field. He was replaced in the fourth inning by Ben Gamel to standing ovation. Kyle Seager at third base then he left the game for Gordon Beckham, Daniel Vogelbach at dh, Ryon Healy at first base, Kristopher Negron at 2nd base, David Freitas at catcher and Andrew Romine at shortstop.
This week I will give my report on the season along with who I think should go. Look forward to seeing the playoffs unfortunately without the Mariners. I wouldn’t be surprise seeing Dipoto make a major trade after the World Series or in November or December. Go M’s.
