much of the game with Julio Rodriguez
hitting a home run in the first inning.
Cal Raleigh hit a home run in the 4th
making it 2-0 lead. Not a large margin
but still a lead.
The 5th inning the Pirates scored a run
then the Mariners added a run in the
bottom to make it 3-1. Certainly a
good thing since the Pirates tied in
the eighth with a two run homer.
In the ninth it was interesting since
the Pirates had the bases loaded
with no outs and the chances were
good they would score at least one
run. Tayler Saucedo who has done
a good job since being promoted
from Tacoma struck out the side.
With JP Crawford and Jarred Kelenic
who was intentionally walked were
on first second with two outs. It looked
like the game would go into extra innings
with Eugenio Suarez up with a 2-2 count
he hit a massive three-run homer for a
walk off win 6-3. This happened to be
the Mariners first walk off of the season
and the last since Cal Raleigh's homer
last season to get them into the playoffs.
The one we will remember for many
years ahead.
Marco Gonzales deserved the victory
giving up one run in five and two-thirds
innings leading 3-1 at the time. Matt Brash
came into to finish the inning with runners
on base. My opinion they need to change
the rule if the starter leaves with the lead
and the other team comes back to tie
or go ahead then your team wins he should
have the victory and Brash the save. Probably never happen but that is my
opinion. What getting the victory means
to the reliever anyway. Saucedo is now
2-0 so what the Mariners would need
a lot more ties or come from behind
wins with him on the mound to have
real meaning while a starter will have
a more reflection of his pitching if
he goes five innings or more. Outside
of win totals we have his era to judge
whether having a good season.
Now the Mariners face the Yankees in
three game series starting Monday.
Bryce Miller starts the series against
Domingo German. Tuesday will be
Logan Gilbert and Luis Castillo on
Wednesday. It is interesting since
George Kirby will be skipped and
Castillo will start instead with one
day less day of rest. The Mariners
must feel it is the right thing to do.
Wonder it changes if the Mariners
win the first two games. The
Mariners have Thursday off then
next week two days off when they
are on the road. We may see Kirby
start the opener against the Rangers
in Texas. Go M's.
