On To New York

Rays 4 Mariners 3

The Seattle Mariners didn't quite have the
offense to end up sweeping the Tampa Bay
Rays for the series and the season. They
have a good record when scoring four
runs a game but not so good when they
don't. Again they had their opportunities.

Logan Gilbert didn't have his A game
going only five innings giving up three
runs along with an unusual four walks
and six strike outs.

The Mariners offense came from the
top of the lineup where JP Crawford
had two hits and Mitch Haniger had
three including a triple.  We do hope
the offense will break out in New York
especially Thursday in the opening
game of the series.  The series is four
games so the Mariners need to win
at least two or even three. A sweep
would be a good present for sure.

Tyler Anderson will make his second
start for the Mariners followed by
Marco Gonzales on Friday. Both
pitchers very similar types so important
to keep walks and home runs to a
minimum. Also, the left handed
batters like Kyle Seager will need
to take advantage of the short fences
in Yankee Stadium.

Now a look at players in Tacoma.

Outfielder Taylor Trammell isn't
hitting as well as he did the first
time being sent down to Tacoma.
He batted .170 in the second half
of July as he was sent down on
July 15. Has two home runs well
as eight rbi's. We hope Taylor
improves in August he has too
much talent to stick where he is
at.

Jose Marmolejos who wasn't
hitting well at all in Seattle is
having a great season in Tacoma
after being sent down on May
24. Jose is batting .365 with
17 home runs and 50 rbi's.
I am sure we will see him in
Seattle at least in September.
The team isn't able to bring up
as many players as they used to
but his bat would be welcome
if he continues hitting in Tacoma.

Donovan Walton infielder who
spent a little time in Seattle because
of injuries to players like Dylan
Moore is hitting .268 in Tacoma.
Doesn't hit with a lot of power
with only three home runs. He
plays solid defense so is a solid
utility type player.

Jose Godoy catcher who spent
nearly a month in Seattle as the
backup catcher while Luis Torrens
was trying to figure things out
at the plate primarily. Showed in
Seattle he is a good defender though
not a good hitter. In Tacoma Godoy
is hitting .246. Godoy make a solid
backup catcher however the Mariners
have Cal Raleigh, Tom Murphy
and Luis Torrens ahead of him.
If an injury happened to either
Raleigh or Murphy we could see
Godoy back in Seattle as the backup
catcher.

Brian O'Keefe another catcher is
having a solid season in Tacoma.
He has never played in the major
league so the Mariners could give
him a try if anything happened to
the Mariner catchers. Brian is hitting
.287 with 14 home runs. He spent
last year in the Mariners alternate
site well as spending this spring
training with the Mariners. Like
the Mariners give him an opportunity
if an injury does occur to any
Mariner catcher.

Darren McCaughan right handed
pitcher we recently heard about
when he made his major league
debut on July 21 in a bullpen game.
McCaughan went five innings
without giving up a hit. On July
26 he made his first major league
start which didn't have the same
results. McCaughan was sent to
Tacoma when the Mariners
acquired Tyler Andersson right
before the trading deadline.
In Tacoma McCaughan has started
eleven games with an era of 3.88
and a record of 5-3. Currently
Justus Sheffield is about ready to
go on rehab assignment and Justin
Dunn isn't quite there yet. If the
Mariners need a starter before either
of those two are ready could see
McCaughan go again. I am sure
we haven't seen the last of him.

The Tacoma Rainiers have several
veteran pitchers on their squad but
for the most part they don't scream
out "lets get to Seattle".
