Good For Mariners on First Game of Exhibition Season

Though it doesn’t really mean anything on the whole scope of things for the upcoming season the Mariners at least opened the spring training games on Wednesday by beating the San Diego Padres 7-0.

The Mariners started off with a three run homer by Chris Iannetta who also had a sacrifice fly in the game to. The Mariners had a total of three home runs with a home run by Franklin Gutierrez and Stefan Romero. James Paxton started the game and pitched getting all six of the batters out in the two innings. With this start by Paxton we can hope that he will continue to stay injury free and open up the season as the fifth starter.

The Mariners go against the Padres again today. Nathan Karns who is battling Paxton for the fifth starter will be facing the Padres. The Mariners picked up Nathan from the Tampa Bay Rays in the first trade by general manager Jerry Dipoto in the fall. Whether he starts the season with the Mariners or is sent to triple A he adds depth to the starting rotation.

Marte, Seager and Cano will be starting again today in the infield while Jesus Montero will start his first game at first base. He did go into the game for Gutierrez as designated and got a hit in two appearances. Gabby Sanchez who went in the game yesterday for Adam Lind will be starting at designated. Nelson Cruz does not look like he will see any action until Saturday.

The Marines will be starting a different outfield today with Boog Powell in center field. He will be flanked in the outfield with Mike Baxter in left field and Stefan Romero in right. Also Steve Clevenger will make his debut as the starting catcher today. He is expected to be the backup catcher to Chris Iannetta this season. He likely will face tough right handed pitchers since he bats left handed. I would not be surprised to see him catch at least twice a week for the Mariners. He could be the designated hitter at times along with first base if something is going on with Adam Lind.

Anyway Mariners we look forward to see what you today whether winning or losing. It is not important for them to win as on how the team plays. Until tomorrow Go Mariners!
