The Seattle Mariners
lost on Tuesday to the Cleveland Indians 4-3. The game was not live on the
radio and was time delayed so I have not a lot of news on it.
Karns pitched his
second game of spring training giving up two runs on five hits in three
innings. Only one of the runs was earned. So the matchup between Karns and
Paxton look like still even though Karns may have a slight edge.
Outfielder and leadoff
batter Aoki started in center field. He is expected to play some there when
Martin needs a day off. Otherwise he will spend most of his time in left field.
He has been working in center field on one of the fields to be comfortable at
the position. He actually played center field all of his time in Japan. He
feels that he can play the position.
In other notes Tuesday’s
game was the first one that both right fielder Seth Smith and utility infielder
Luis Sardinas did not get a hit in the game. It does seem to be that Sardinas
still has the edge over Chris Taylor and Sawn O’Malley for the position of
utility player. Sardinas has played a little in center field as well.
In other local sports
the University of Washington men’s basketball team takes on Stanford today at
noon in the Pac-12 tournament. The game will be shown on the Pac-12 network
followed by Washington State Cougars taking on Colorado at 2:30 pm. I believe
the key for the Huskies to beat Stanford will be the play of senior guard
Andrew Andrews who led the Huskies and the Pac-12 in scoring. His last game
against the Cougars he scored 47 points. If he scores again like against the
Cougars the Huskies will be Stanford easy. The winner takes on number one seed
and league champion Oregon Ducks on Thursday.
It is reported that
outside linebacker and pass rusher Bruce Irvin is expected to sign with the
Oakland Raiders. He is the first of the Seattle Seahawk free agents to leave.
Today at 1 pm that any free agents in the NFL can sign with any team of their
choice. We will have to see if the Seahawks will lose any other free agents in
the coming days. Most likely Irvin will be replaced in the upcoming college
draft. Irvin wanted to come back to the Seahawks however it came all down to
the money. The Seahawks could not afford to sign him to a high contract. It is
reported that the Seahawks are $15 million under the cap so for them to sign
some of their own free agents they may have to release some other players. Now
we have to wait to see what happens.
Anyway the Mariners
game today will be on Roots Sports at 12 noon. Nelson Cruz will be making his
first appearance playing in the field in right. Franklin Gutierrez be in left
and Leonys Martin Center. Marte, Seager and Cano will be in the field with
Jesus Montero starting at first base. Lee is expected to go into the game later
for Montero. Regular catcher Chris Iannetta will be catching while Gabby
Sanchez will be the designated hitter.
It looks like right
handed reliever has a good chance to make the Mariner roster in the bullpen
since Evan Scribner and Ryan Cook are both out with strained back muscles. Cook
is expected to be out longer and most likely start the season at Tacoma. Have
to see whether Scribner who was expected to be in the bullpen will be ready by
opening day. So if you have the chance see the Mariners game today on TV. If
you can’t watch it live I am sure it will be replayed tonight as well. Go
Mariners along with the Huskies and Cougars!
