Thank You Tim Beckham

It looked like the Seattle Mariners were going to blow a game that they had the lead most of Tuesday night; however, Tim Beckham pinch hitting for leftfielder Mac Williamson hit a home run putting the Mariners ahead and the final score of 5-4.

The St. Louis Cardinals visiting Seattle for interleague play started off with a home run off the bat of Jose Martinez who was their designated hitter for the game. He had a second home run in the sixth inning so up to that point he was the Cardinal’s offense.

The Mariners took the lead in the second inning with two runs. The lead 2-1 held up until the 5th inning when Omar Narvaez hit a two-run homer to extend it to 4-1. The Mariners had other opportunities before that because Cardinal’s starting pitcher Jack Flaherty had trouble early on getting the ball over the plate. He had problems locating his fastball but the Mariners couldn’t take advantage of it.

The Cardinals had their bullpen up throwing in the second inning; however, Flaherty was able to get back on track eventually, no thanks to the Mariners offense. Flaherty was able to get into the fifth inning but was removed with two outs after Narvaez home run.

The Cardinals were able to tie the score in the seventh inning when leadoff hitter Yairo Munoz hit a two-run home run. So it came down to Beckham’s home run to win the game.

Austin Adams had another outstanding relief appearance coming in for Anthony Bass who yield Munoz’s home run. Adams struck out all four batters he faced. Roenis Elias finished off getting his 11th save of the season.

Wednesday night the Mariners will have Mike Leake on the mound facing Cardinal’s former ace Adam Wainwright who seems like he has been around forever. It has only been since 2005 but I am sure you have my point. I expect this will be a tight game all the way through if both guys are pitching well.

The Mariners are in the signing period for international players. Right now they have signed twelve players primarily from the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. The Mariners did sign a pitcher out of Brazil though. They are young so it will be a while before seeing any one of them playing for the Mariners.

On the injury front, there isn’t anything new to report, however, Dee Gordon was back in the lineup on Tuesday night.  He did get a hit driving in a run, he stole second base and scored himself. A good day for Dee; it looks like the Mariners won’t have any of the other injured players back until after the all-star break. Go M's.
