Chris Flexen Officially Signed

We have known for a little while the
Mariners were signing Chris Flexen
a former pitcher with the New York
Mets and played this year in Korea.

It became official Flexen is a Mariner
on Friday. Flexen will compete for a
spot in the starting rotation, however,
he could be a member of the bullpen.

The Mariners had a full 40-man roster
so they ended up designating utility
player Tim Lopes for assignment. A
big surprise by many including myself.

With Flexen signed the Mariners now
24 pitchers on the 40-man roster.
Depending how many roster spots for
next season will decide how many
pitchers they will have on the opening
day roster.

This season they had a 28-man roster
next season they could go down to 26.
Most likely they will carry 13 or possible
14 pitchers. Dipoto announced already
they will go with a six-man rotation
again. This means seven or eight relievers.

The Mariners go with 14 pitchers then
this means ten of these pitchers on the
40-man roster won't be on the opening
day roster.

What my point is the Mariners should have
designated a pitcher for assignment. I suppose
they think Lopes will pass through waivers.
I guess we will see.

The Mariners have a full 40-man roster so
adding another player they will have to
release another player as well. Dipoto
makes a trade than they may need to
make room as well depending on how
the trade comes down.

Anyway I hope Lopes makes it back on
the Mariner team. If not best wishes to
him wherever he lands.
