be as good as anticipated losing to Purdue
84-66 last Friday. They responded back
with a win on Sunday 88-84 over Xavier.
They are now ranked #14 after being number
2.
Gonzaga plays Baylor on Friday on the road.
They will have to show what they have to be
a national contender this season.
In baseball the Winter Meetings begin this
weekend. Will the Mariners sign a free agent
or make a trade at the meetings or before.
They have been silent though sure they are
talking. Not much news on Mitch Haniger so
does mean that he will be back or not? The Mariners
certainly have to pick up another if not.
The Mariners do have three pitchers listed between
ten and twenty of their top 30 prospects. Generally
position players don't make the majors after the
top ten. Interesting though outfielder Cade Marlowe
who was on the extra squad for the playoffs in case
of injuries is listed as the Mariners #21 prospect.
This must mean they have some pretty good position
prospects ahead of him.
The trade of lefty Adam Macko to the Toronto Blue
Jay's prospects have moved up. Recently I have written
about top ten including Macko. Now I will give the new #10
and 11. #10 is Lazaro Montes an outfielder from Cuba.
He is 18 so a few years before seeing him. Lazaro considered
the number 8 in the international pool the Mariners signed
in January. In his first pro season in Dominican summer league
Lazaro hit .284 and showed some power with 10 home runs.
He does hit left handed so keep his name for T-Mobile Park
in several years.
#11 is infielder Michael Arroyo who signed as international player
this year as well. He batted .314 with 4 home runs in the Dominican.
Both players could be playing in the USA this year. Possibly at
Low level A Modesto.
Any trades the Mariners do make could a top prospect or two.
