Gonzales Unable To Get #15

Friday night Marco Gonzales was going after win number 15 in Arlington, Texas; however, he lost 6-3.

Going into this game he had a record of 2-2 in five starts for the month of August.  He had come off his best start of the month beating Toronto 3-1 on August 25th when he gave up one run on three hits. This time he went only five and two-third innings giving up all six of the runs the Rangers scored.

The sixth inning was the toughest on Gonzales when he gave up three runs. He will try again to get his 15th win in his next outing.  Erik Swanson came in finishing off the game going two and third innings. He did an outstanding job striking out five of the seven batters he faced without giving up a hit.

Swanson has done a good job for the most part since returning to the Mariners on July 17. In his last six appearances, he has gone eight innings giving up only two hits.
When the Mariners acquired Swanson along with Justus Sheffield from the Yankees for James Paxton in the off-season the thought he could be at the end of the rotation starter; however, as of late he is showing good value in the bullpen. It would not surprise me if he is one of the seven or eight relievers in the bullpen when next season begins.
Saturday night the Mariners will start with the opener then go with Tommy Milone. I am not sure why Milone is actually still on the team. He hasn’t done well either starting or coming in the second inning.

Milone is 32 years of age so being part of a rebuild doesn’t seem to commute in my mind anyway. Had he been pitching well I might be thinking differently. I understand the Mariners bringing up Milone in May after he had signed a minor league deal and started the season in Tacoma.

I don’t expect Milone to be on the team next season so why is the point he is still around. This being the last game of August he will have to show something because he likely won’t get in a lot of games in September unless it is early on with double-A Arkansas being in their league playoffs. I just hope he is able to keep the Mariners in the game so they have a chance to win. Go M’s.
