On Tuesday night for a while, it looked like the Seattle
Mariners were going to be no-hit for the second time in a week by the San Diego
Padres. Fortunately, it didn’t happen for more than just the second time in a
week. The Padres have never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter in the history of
their franchise. I am sure the players would have been embarrassed to hear this
if it had happened.
The Mariner pitching was matching that of the Padres until
the fifth inning when Wade LeBlanc gave up five runs including a two-run homer
to Fernando Tatis Jr. and a solo homer by Josh Naylor.
The Mariners didn’t get their first hit until Omar Narvaez
hit a single in the seventh inning. Kyle Seager followed with a double,
however, neither he nor Narvaez was able to score. Padres starting pitcher
Dinelson Lamet threw an outstanding game as you can imagine through seven
innings. Besides giving up the two hits in the seventh inning he did walk four batters
but struck out 12 Mariner hitters. I haven’t seen too many pitchers look as
sharp as he did Tuesday night.
The Mariners though were able to get to reliever Adrian
Morejon who came in for Lamet in the eighth inning. The Mariners scored all
four of their runs in the eighth. Tim Lopes who was activated onto the roster
earlier after the suspension of Tim Beckham entered the game after Dan
Vogelbach was ejected for complaining about being struck out. Tim Lopes was on
the concussion list than went to Tacoma for a rehab assignment. This was after
being hit in the head a couple weeks ago when he made his major league debut.
Lopes was able to deliver his first career major league hit
which turned out to be a two-run homer. Although the Mariners lost I am sure he
will remember the rest of his life.
This all happened after Erik Swanson came in for Wade LeBlanc
in the seventh inning. He looked good pitching in the seventh, however, in the
eighth inning he gave up two home runs. The Padres scored another run in the
ninth inning to make the final score San Diego 9 Mariners 4.
Now the Mariners have to see about rebounding to even the
series Wednesday afternoon. Yusei
Kikuchi will go for the Mariners. He too is hoping to rebound after having
several poor outings including the loss in Houston. The Mariners have Thursday
off before the Edgar Martinez Hall of Fame Weekend against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Though the Mariners lost they did have good news where Dee
Gordon, Mitch Haniger, and Braden Bishop all took batting practice. Not sure
when any of them will be activated though likely all three will go on rehab
assignments. Speaking of rehab assignments Felix Hernandez is expected to go on
another one in Modesto, California on Thursday night. The Mariners are hoping
later this month Felix will be able to join the team again. He could be the
pitcher replacing Mike Leake when the time comes.
