Mariners Lose On Edgar’s Night

The pre-game show with all the dignitary’s along with the man of the day celebrating Edgar Martinez induction into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame turned out to be the best part. It was great to see all these people including Edgar’s family, however, the game began it turned into another loss.

Matt Wisler began as the opener followed by Tommy Milone. Wisler pitched two fine innings giving up one hit and no runs while striking out one. Milone went four innings giving up six hits, five runs didn’t walk or strike out a batter but gave up three home runs.

Tommy Milone did well his first two innings, however, he gave up a home run to former Mariner Mike Zunino in the fifth inning with two runners on base. The Rays hit another home run in the 5th inning to make it 4-1. The Mariners did respond with two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning making it 4-3. Omar Narvaez hit his 17th home run in the 5th inning.

Mallex Smith and Austin Nola each had two hits in the game. They were the only ones with multiple hits in the game. Smith had a double and a triple while Nola had two singles. He did score a run in the game as well as Smith.

Rookie Tim Lopes started in left. He had a hit driving in two runs. The Mariners sent Ryan Court back down to Tacoma when they activated Dee Gordon off the injured list. Gordon hit seventh while playing second base and had a hit in four at-bats.

Rookie Reggie McClain came in for Milone and pitched three innings. He gave up one hit while striking out two without giving up a run. This was his second appearance in the major leagues for the Mariners. Much better than his major league debut. I expect he was nervous in that game. He could be someone the Mariners will look at coming out of the bullpen next season.

Milone started out well for the Mariners when he came up to the team in May along with June. In July and now in August he hasn’t done well at all. His ERA is just over seven runs a game. He is 0-5 in the two months with an overall record of 1-7. I would look at putting him in the bullpen or release him. They can put Justus Sheffield in his spot instead of Mike Leake’s spot in the rotation or have two pitchers added to the rotation. One thing for sure the hitters have figured Milone out and he has given up 12 home runs too. Time to move on from him; he isn’t part of the Mariners future.

Yusei Kikuchi will go Sunday afternoon for the Mariners. We hope he matches his last outing so the Mariners can salvage a win in this series instead of being swept once again. Go M’s.
