Mariners 4 Astros 0
often they have done in many of their
wins doing with little offense until the
end. Abraham Toro hit a grand slam
home run in the bottom of the 8th inning.
Abraham Toro has hit .296 for the Mariners
in the month of August after coming over
in late July. His first two games with the
Mariners he hit two home runs and in August
two more including Tuesday night's grand
slam. He had 12 rbi's for the month. Toro
had to adjust playing a new position at
2nd base which he has done fine. Hard to
know whether he will be at 2nd base or
moved to his natural position of 3rd base.
JP Crawford, Kyle Seager, and Ty France
were on base when Toro hit his home run.
Ironic those are three of the four guys
who make up their offense for the most
part. Also, the batters six through nine
didn't have a hit in the game which isn't
a big surprise either.
The Mariners are now 71-62 going into
September the last month left in the season.
I am sure many people believe the Mariners
wouldn't win anymore than 71 games so
we could say September will be a bonus
whether they make the playoffs or not as
a wild card. You figure they won't however
how they win in September will likely
be the same way they have won most of
the 71 games.
We can count on JP Crawford, Ty France
and Abraham Toro as solid hitters in the
lineup. Mitch Haniger and Kyle Seager
will have their moments primarily hitting
home runs. Haniger had a tough time at
the plate where he hit only .213 in August
with four home runs and 10 rbi's. Kyle
Seager didn't hit well for average either
in August where he hit .194, however he
did have nine home runs and 21 rbi's. So
you can say he was all or nothing as well.
JP Crawford only hit .248 in August though
had a good on base percentage of .328. He
scored 14 of his 67 runs in August. Crawford
history is where he hasn't hit well after the
all-star break. Though he didn't hit as well
as earlier he did ok. We hope can do as well
or better in September.
Ty France had a great August hitting .348 for
the month after having a pretty good July as
well. He leads the Mariners with a .293 batting
average. If it wasn't for his injury in May that
kept it out for a short period of time he would
be hitting over .300. France has been the
Mariners offensive player of the year though
JP Crawford and Mitch Haniger had good starts.
France had six of his sixteen home runs in
August as well. Most of those six helped win
games.
Yusei Kikuchi went seven innings Tuesday
night without giving up a run of course.
He only gave up four hits on the night.
When Kikuchi goes he really does though
he is inconsistent on the mound. Primarily
he has one rough inning in the game. We
hope this means a good September for Kikuchi.
September will be important to Kikuchi. The
five or six starts he has will decide whether
the Mariners will take his option or not.
The Mariners can count on Chris Flexen and
Tyler Anderson for the most part getting them
a chance to win. As of late Marco Gonzales
can be added to the list. Kikuchi and Logan
Gilbert don't really know. Gilbert will be
pitching more than he has a professional
in September so hard to know whether he
will continue having bad starts or not. We
hope that he can have some good ones mixed
in with the bad ones.
The Mariners roster will be expanded beginning
on September 1st. Likely Justus Sheffield will
be added on. This time he will begin in the bullpen.
Since he has primarily been a starter we will
probably see him five or six times at the most.
You figure he is accustomed to pitching once
a week. This will show whether his future will
be in the Mariners bullpen or not. The Mariner
roster this year will only expand by two unlike
previous seasons. Most likely they will add
a position player as well. At some point we
should see Jake Fraley again so he will take
a spot. Justin Dunn it is hard to know whether
he will return this season or not. If he does
most likely he will be coming out of the bullpen
as well or make a start in place of Gilbert at
some point.
Anyway September should be an exciting month
no matter how it turns out. We would think the
Mariners should have around 85 wins when the
season ends or around that amount anyway we
will see. The Mariners start a three game series
over the weekend against the Diamondbacks
in Arizona followed by three at Houston. They
will return home to play three against the
Diamondbacks followed by three against the
Boston Red Sox. It will be interesting to see
how these next 12 games will go. Go M's.
