came to football. Both the Huskies and
Cougars lost, however the Mariners won
as should be expected.
We start out with the Mariners they won
over the Arizona Diamondbacks in
Phoenix 8-5. You have to say Kyle
Seager was the hero of the game as
he hit two three-run homers in the game.
The first was in the first inning putting
the Mariners ahead briefly.
Marco Gonzales got off to a rough start
giving up four runs in the first inning
including a two-run homer. You think
someone who was given a three-run
lead would have done a better job.
Marco was able to go five innings
fortunately only giving up another
run in the 4th inning to former Mariner
Ketel Marte on a solo home run.
The Mariners had taken a brief lead
again scoring two runs in the top of
the fourth inning. So Marte's home run
tied the score.
Kyle Seager's second three run home
run happened in the sixth inning. The
Mariners bullpen did a fine job. Anthony
Misiewicz and Diego Castillo who both
came off the injured list finished the game
off in the 8th and 9th inning.
Montana 13 Washington Huskies 7
This was an unusual game besides Montana
upsetting the Huskies. The Huskies scored
first series of the game mixing up run and
pass but nothing after that. Montana kicked
a field goal in their first series. So the score
stayed 7-3 Washington until the 4th quarter.
Montana score ten unanswered points to
win the game. The unusual part was Richard
Newton started the game at running back but
the other running backs except Cameron David
who had four carries for 8 plays didn't play.
Also, the backup receivers played most of
the game as well. Dylan Morris did start at
quarterback. I wouldn't say he had a great
passing game but he didn't have his usual
targets either. Cade Otton tight end who
lead with eight receptions was the primary
receiver in the game.
Are you worried about the Huskies next week
against Michigan on the road. Normally I
would be with an upset like this but I do expect
the other running backs and receivers to play.
It is though Coach Jimmy Lake decided to
play this one like the NFL did with their preseason
game keep the starters out. I would say it backfired
on him. I could see not playing the starters a
significant amount of time but you think they
could have waited until they had a comfortable
lead. I hope he learned from this one. If the Huskies
lose next week it really was a backfire.
Washington State Cougars had a close game in this
one though they lost 26-23 to Utah State. The
Cougars started former Tennessee quarterback
Jarrett Guarantano, however, last year's qb
Jayden de Laura who had been suspended for
spring practice for having a dui. Nothing new
in Pullman. Utah State came from behind to
win the game scoring 15 points to Cougars 3
in the 4th quarter.
Next Saturday the Cougars are home again
against Portland State. They better win next
week as they take on USC in conference play
the following week. I don't think they want
to start out 0-3.
I almost forgot Kyle Lewis has fallen back
on his rehab. There is a good chance we won't
see him the rest of the way in September.
The Mariner will likely let him get ready for
next season. We wish the best for him too.
