performance by Logan Gilbert beat
the Houston Astros 3-1. This gave
the Mariners the series 3-1 as well.
The only run Gilbert gave up was a
home run by catcher Martin Maldonado.
He is only hitting .172 with seven home
runs with two in the series. Saturday's
home run gave the Astros the win. This
time came short. Martin hit the home
run in the sixth inning.
The Mariners pitching has been do good
over the last 30 days they lead the major
leagues in starting pitching with an era
of 2.91 and the opposition is batting
.207 the best as well. The starters have
gone far enough innings the bullpen has
the fewest innings and pitches in majors
as well. This helps the Mariners going
out of the break with a bullpen being
rested.
Gilbert ended up going seven innings
giving up three hits including the home
run. He had no walks and six strikeouts.
Matt Brash pitched the 8th giving up no hits and one strikeout. Paul Sewald gave up
a walk after two outs making me nervous
however was able to.get the third out.
It was his 17 save on the season.
The Mariners scored all three runs in the
fourth inning. Julio led the inning off
getting on base by an error. He ended up stealing second. Ty France by no surprise
was hit by a pitch. Teoscar Hernandez hit a ball to center field to score Julio. France
went to third. Hernandez ended up going to
second on an error when he was trying to
stretch to be a double. On two strikes Jarred Kelenic hit a double to score France
and Hernandez. All the scoring and enough
for the Mariners.
After the game was the first round of major league's amateur draft. With the 22nd overall pick the Mariners took high school
shortstop Colt Emerson. Second year in a row to draft a shortstop in the first round.
The Mariners next pick #29 in first round
another high schooler outfielder Jonny
Farmelo. The Mariners received that pick for Julio Rodriguez being rookie of the year last season. The Mariners had the next
pick #30 competitive balance. Again they
drafted another high school shortstop
in Tai Peete. He did pitch some in high
school however injuries caused him not
to pitch his senior year. The Mariners
have another pick coming Sunday night
in the second round. Monday will be
rounds three through ten. The final
rounds eleven through twenty will be
on Tuesday.
The Mariners already had two shortstops
in their top six prospects and another
at # 14. Emerson and Peete will join
that group. We will have to see over
the next three or four years whether
these guys will stick at short. If they
all end up in the majors I would see
only at short unless one other is
involved in a trade.
Without real insight I expect round two
thru ten will have likely five pitchers
in the mix. This supposed to be a level
of position players so we could see maybe
one less pitcher and have more in round
eleven through twenty.
Though the Mariners have Cal Raleigh
on the major league roster and top
prospect Harry Ford at catcher the
Mariners could still draft a catcher
if they find a good one. Ford has a
capability playing another position
to. At this point Tom Murphy will
likely be the number two catcher
another year after this one. Though
Ford could play another position we
could see him still play some at catcher
as well. The Mariners have shown to
like players who have versatility. They
haven't had anyone with high upside
to catch and play elsewhere too.
With Ford though he does look to be
a position player starter. Raleigh
being a starter a short time at catcher
will likely stick there. We could see
Ford catch when Raleigh has a day off.
Unlike Murphy we could see Ford do
more than dh. Whatever happens it
is a good problem for the Mariners
to have.
Monday we will look at who the Mariners
drafted and the Mariners starting pitching
and the catchers for the first half of the
season. Go M's.
