Mariners Are No-Hit

Wednesday afternoon I knew the Mariners
were going to have a rough outing against
the Baltimore Orioles. John Means the
Baltimore Orioles ace threw a no-hitter
against the M's. It was only the third time
in the history of the Mariners to be no-hit
by a single pitcher.

John Means struck out 12 Mariner batters
and did not walk a batter. The only thing
that kept him from a perfect game was
when Sam Haggerty reached first base
on a dropped third strike. Also, Means
threw each Mariners batter a strike on
the first pitch on all except one batter.
It is hard to believe a pitcher would
dominate another team including the
Mariners who do have several holes
in their batting order. Not only did he
throw strikes so many times he didn't
waste time throwing pitches either.
On the Mariner TV broadcast they
figure he averaged about eight seconds
between pitches another amazing fate.

Means is now 4-0 with an era of 1.37.
So you can see it isn't only the Mariners
he has pitched well against. This is the
first game he went a complete game
as well in his career. Means has started
seven games so he has given up some
hits. In seven games he has gone 46
innings giving up 21 hits, walked 10
and strikes out 50 batters. Also, Means
has given up 7 total runs in the seven
games. Not bad at all.

Yusei Kikuchi pitches for the Mariners.
In his previous outing he almost did
as well as Means. He went seven innings
giving up just one hit. Kikuchi in this
game went seven innings giving up
five hits, three runs, one walk and
striking out seven innings.

Aaron Fletcher making his season
debut in the eight inning gave up
three runs on a homer. Ljay Newsome
back in the bullpen after a terrible
start against the Angels last Saturday
giving up eight runs pitched the 9th
inning giving up no hits, and striking
out two. It seems right now in his
career Newsome feels more comfortable
coming out of the bullpen.

The Mariners go on the road to take on
the Rangers in Texas Friday through
Sunday. After that on to LA to take on
the Dodgers for two Tuesday and
Wednesday before returning home
to face the Cleveland Indians for
four and the Detroit Tigers for three,
Go M's.
