Rockies in Denver on Tuesday. Marco
Gonzales starts for the Mariners. It is a
homecoming since he was born there
and his father is a coach in the Rockies
farm system.
Marco has been struggling this season
with a 1-5 record with an era of 5.88.
July hasn't been kind to Marco where
in two starts has an era of 10.00 giving
up five home runs. Of course, now he
will be in Coors Field where home runs
can be very friendly.
This series is two games so important
to win the first game. The Mariners will
be facing German Marques the Rockies
number one starter so wont' be an easy
task. There is talk Marques could be
traded before the trading deadline. There
are those who would like the Mariners
to go after him since they can use help
in the starting rotation. The thing is it
could cost the Mariners a lot and what
prospects would they be willing to give
the Rockies.
Wednesday's game no pitchers have
been announced to start yet. I really
do hope it Chris Flexen with the day
off on Monday he could start once
again. I don't want the Mariners to
go with an opener. Still wonder when
Justin Dunn will come off the injured
list though the latest news it might
be a couple more weeks. At that
point the trading deadline will have
passed. We do hope the Mariners do
pick up another starter by then.
Mitch Haniger was named as player
of the week in the American League
for the last week. We hope his hot
streak continues especially in Colorado.
Dillon Thomas was recalled for the
second time this season. I do hope
he plays a lot while he is here since
Thomas is above defensively then
Jake Bauers and Shed Long Jr. Also,
he should hit at least as well as both
of them too.
Now a look at prospects #16 thru 18
#16 Aaron Fletcher left-handed pitcher
and reliever. He relieved in Seattle a
couple games this season however has
spent the majority of this season at
triple-A Tacoma. He doesn't have a
great era at 5.70 however has relieved
in 18 games walking five batters and
striking out 24 so just over one per
inning. Likely see Fetcher again during
the season.
#17 Austin Shenton third baseman a
local player who started his college
career at Bellevue Community College.
The Mariners like his makeup when it
comes to hitting. Austin started the
season at Everett where he hit .295
with 11 home runs and 53 rbi's in 57
games. He was recently promoted to
double-A Arkansas where he has
started off outstanding hitting .455
though only three games. We will
see how he continues the rest of
this year.
#18 Jonatan Clase left-handed hitting
outfielder is only 19 years old the
Mariners signed as an international
player out of Dominican Republic.
Currently playing rookie ball in
Arizona. Clase has only appeared in
14 games with a batting of average
of .245 however his on base percentage
is good at .333. Most likely he will
be at A ball next year.
Next time we will look at #19 thru 21
The Seattle Kraken will have the expansion
draft on Wednesday. ESPN will have a
program beginning at 5 pm pacific time
showing who they selected. The Kraken
do know who the other teams have put
up for the expansion draft. They will
start selecting in the morning then when
completed let the NHL who they have taken.
They will take one player from each team.
There are some veteran players in their
late 20s and early 30s so see how many
of them they will take well as others
around 25 years old. When I have the
results I will let you know. Might not
before 5 pm but we will see. Be interesting
to see who maybe the faces of the Kraken.
