Mariners 5 Rangers 4 ten innings
.
Pitching: Both starting pitchers
did a good job each going five
and two-thirds innings. Kyle
Gibson of the Rangers is one
of top pitchers in the American
League. He gave up only one
run to the Mariners. Gibson
lasted into the sixth inning
because the Mariners made
him throw a lot of pitches (110).
Gibson walked three batters
while striking out seven a little
more above his average on both.
Logan Gilbert left the game with
the Texas Rangers leading 3-1.
Gilbert pitched a good game, however,
the defense didn't help him out.
In the third inning Mitch Haniger
lost a ball in the skies plus first
baseman Jake Bauers distracted
him sliding in front of him. Also,
he overthrew home plate so both
the fifth inning the Rangers scored
another run, though Gilbert was
charged a run had the Mariners
been able to complete a double
play Gilbert would have had no
runs charged against him.
Player of the game: Jake Fraley
as he scored the first and last runs
of the game. Fraley hit a home run
in the fifth and a single to end the
game for the Mariner win in the
10th inning. Along the way Fraley
made a diving catch in left field
too. Fraley is having a solid season
after returning from the injured list.
Besides playing solid defense Fraley
has made several key hits along the
way as well as walk offs. He currently
is hitting .270 while walking 29
times in 32 games.
The Mariners went ahead in the 8th
inning scoring two runs making it
4-3. Unfortunately a throwing error
by Ty France who was playing third
base tied the score. A heads up play
by Jake Bauers at first base throwing
the ball home cost the Rangers a run,
otherwise they would have won the
game in regulation. One of the runs
scored by the Mariners was a homer
by Luis Torrens who has done well
since being recalled from Tacoma.
The Mariners now have won 13
straight games at home against the
Rangers. If the Mariners sweep the
Rangers they tie the record of straight
games against an opponent at home.
For the first time I say in a while the
Mariners didn't make any changes to
the roster to begin a new series.
Marco Gonzales will make the start
Saturday night for the first time since
the birth of his daughter. We will see
what that might have done for Marco.
