The Seattle Mariners lost for the second time in Chicago
against the Cubs Tuesday night 6-1. The good news the Mariners don’t play
Wednesday; however, the bad news they go to Houston to play four games against
the Astros.
We could say Felix Hernandez didn’t get any run support but
he only pitched three innings because he had trouble with walking batters. He
walked four batters while striking out five. Servais must have figured throwing
70 pitches were enough. When Felix left the game the Mariners were down 2-0.
Wade LeBlanc came in the fourth inning for the Mariners but
lasted only two innings. He gave up a home run with two runners on base to
right-fielder Nicholas Castellanos in the fifth inning. If his name sounds familiar
the Cubs picked him up at the trading deadline from the Detroit Tigers. He has
hurt other teams since coming over to Chicago. The home run against the
Mariners was his 12th since coming over to the Cubs.
The Mariners offense didn’t help matters though they were
facing Jon Lester; however, he does have an ERA over four runs a game. He has
given up 23 home runs on the season but the Mariners were not able to get one
off of him.
The Mariners single run was on a hit by Daniel Vogelbach
pinch-hitting in the pitcher’s spot to drive in Dee Gordon. The Mariners had
nine hits in the game but were not able to bring in any other runners.
The rest of September and the season is to see what players
will play to deserve to return next season.
The Mariners brought up infielder Shed Long and reliever Zach
Grotz from Tacoma with the season done for them. They both got into the game
with Long pinch-hitting for Austin Nola late in the game while Grotz pitched
the eighth inning. He gave up no runs, no hits, and struck out a batter. This
was his second time up. He pitched most of the season in double-A Arkansas.
Speaking of Arkansas they start the playoffs Wednesday night.
The first game will be televised on Roots Sports at 5 pm pacific time. When
their season is over the Mariners will promote at least a couple of their
players. Justin Dunn for sure we will see starting for the Mariner and outfielder
Kyle Lewis.
Enjoy watching September baseball even though we might not
get a lot of wins in the process. Go M’s.
