Saturday was the day the
Seahawks had to trim their roster down to 53 the number of players each team
has for their regular season.
The Seahawks made some
interesting and surprising moves. For example, they released all three backup
quarterbacks including Geno Smith who everyone thought would be their number
two quarterback behind Russell Wilson. Right now the Seahawks have no backup
quarterback. Jokingly who needs a number two since Wilson always plays. Smith could return or they bring in someone else.
Though the Seahawks had to get down to 53 players doesn’t mean
this is the roster they will go with when the season starts next Sunday at home
against the Cincinnati Bengals. Another surprise was the cut of receiver Jaron
Brown who everyone expected to be the second receiver to Tyler Lockett.
Two veteran players who
returned to Seattle for another try were cut as well in defensive end Cassius
Marsh and defensive back DeShawn Shead.
Also, running back J.D.
McKissic was waived by the Seahawks.
With McKissic being waived both C.J. Prosise
and Travis Homer made it as the two additional running backs to Chris Carson
and Rashaad Penny. The Seahawks are
going with six wide receivers right now including newcomers DK Metcalf, Gary
Jennings, John Ursua, and Malik Turner.
On the defensive side, the Seahawks will go with nine defensive linemen since the trade Saturday morning with the Seahawks
acquiring Jadeveon Clowney from Houston Texans.
At linebacker
the Seahawks are going with seven. Both Shaquem Griffin and rookie former
Washington Husky Ben Burr-Kirven made the team. At cornerback, the Seahawks will
be going with five. They acquired Parry Nickerson on Saturday from the New York
Jets. He and Akeem King will compete to play in the nickel when the Seahawks go
with five defensive backs.
To round out the
defensive side of the ball the Seahawks will go with five safeties as well. Among
the five will be rookies Marquise Blair and Ugo Amadi. The three specialists
will be punter Michael Dickson, placekicker Jason Myers, and long snapper Tyler
Ott. Stay tuned to see what other moves the Seahawks make.
In college
football the Washington Huskies beat Eastern Washington Eagles 47-14 on
Saturday afternoon. Jacob Eason making his Husky debut threw over three hundred
yards and four touchdowns. Next up for the Huskies will be California
Golden Bears at home. Washington State
rolled past New Mexico State big time as well as winning 58-7. Quarterback Anthony
Gordon made his first college start also threw for four touchdowns and over
three hundred yards too. Next Saturday they will take on North Colorado in
Pullman.
Nearby the
Oregon Ducks lost to Auburn playing in Arlington Texas 27-21. Auburn came back
to win the game after the Ducks led 14-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Friday night the Oregon State Beavers lost to Oklahoma State 52-36. So while
the Washington schools both won the Oregon schools both lost. The Ducks are one
of the favorites to win the Pac-12 North division. It will be interesting to
see if they can recover from their loss to Auburn.
