Castillo and Raleigh Make First Start

As we know it is the beginning of spring
training so things turn out different than
we might think.

Actually  Luis Castillo  pitched ok in his
first outing  going  two innings. He gave up
an unearned run but it was windy as well.

The Mariners  won 9-8. The Cleveland
Guardians came back to tie 8-8 after the
Mariners were ahead 8-1. Bryce Miller
made his first appearance as well. He
is pitching  to  see whether he will be
the 5th starter or work out of the bullpen.
He may begin the season  in double-A  too.
Bryce gave up one hit, one walk and striking
out two while giving  up  no runs.

Teoscar Hernandez  hit a three-run homer
and Ty France had a solo shot to help in
their offense side. JP Crawford  had a hit
driving in a couple and so did Cade Marlowe
who is trying to  make the team as an extra
outfielder.  Since manager Scott  Servais  likes
Marlowe he is in a good  spot. He would have
to play his way off the team.

Trevor  Gott who signed as a free agent during
the off-season to pitch in the  bullpen didn't
have a good outing giving up  four  runs in
2/3 of an inning. The Mariners  have a tough
bullpen  to crack so Gott will have to  improve
to make the team. The Mariners  have  eight
spots in the bullpen  and many of them are
taken already.  Somewhere they will likely
have to trade a reliever. Paul Sewald, Diego
Castillo,  Andre Munoz,  and Matt Brash have
made the club. This leaves four more spots.
When we get closer  to  the  end of March we
will have better idea who the other four will
be. This could  include Chris Flexen or Marco
Gonzales who doesn't  win the 5th starter.

Robbie Ray  starts against the Chicago Cubs
on Wednesday. The Mariners  have 25 preseason
games remaining. This means each starter has
four starts remaining before the season begins. Go M's.
