were hoping that Cole Young could be the
team's second baseman. The alternative
would have been Brendan Donovan. He
started the season at third base. Before
April was over there was questions whether
he could play third or not and then he went
on the injured list. Now he is on rehab
assignment.
Colt Emerson came into the season as the
Mariners top prospects. He ended up signing
nine year contract while still in triple A. Talk
was that he would likely be called up in May.
This happened as much to do with Donovan's
injury as anything. He wasn't even the player
initially to take Donovan's spot.
When Colt came up he started at third base.
Eventually even JP Crawford thought shortstop
is his best position. JP volunteered to move
to third base. Even has played good third base.
I was thinking about who the Mariners best
shorstop and second base duo in the 50 years
they have been around. There is no question
that Alex Rodriquez is the best shorstop. Among
the second baseman in his seven years with
the Mariners it might be Joey Cora. JP Crawford
is likely the Mariners next best shortstop. I can't
think of any of them at second base unless you
count Cole Young. Bringing this up Emerson
and Young are not far from being the best duo
ever for the Mariners. In another year there may
not be any question.
Not only is Cole Young doing well both offensevily
and on defense too he has played more than any
one on the team. Also having the best season of
any player in the infield. In fact Randy Arozarena
and Dominic Canzone maybe the only players
doing better and that is close.
If the Mariners were to sign another player
to a long term contract Cole Young would
be the next one I expect. The Mariners are
going into the series in LA against the Dodgers.
It doesn't look good at the moment. In fact
to salve the season a trade before the deadline
is the only way to go without a miracle.
