the Seattle Mariners are going to
sign Colt Emerson to an eight year
contract for $95 million. There is an
option for a 9th year making it a total
of $130 million. That is the largest
contract for someone in his position.
This says to me that we will see him
shortly in a Mariners uniform. We
could see Colt play some third base
and shortstop for this season. JP
Crawford may come off the injured
list when the Mariners go on the
first road trip or during that trip.
What JP's future looks like in years
ahead is hard to know with the M's.
When he does play he will need to
have a good season. He has value
whether he starts or not. He will be
a free agent so it will depend what
another team looks at him as well
as the Mariners.
Throughout spring training Emerson
we heard that he looked good to be
the Mariners everyday shortstop. If
that is the case we could see Crawford
play some second base as well as
shortstop. I think third base maybe
harder to do so. Cole Young does look
like future second baseman however
time will tell though it looks good right
now. Whatever the case the Mariners
look to be in a good position.
Who next will the Mariners sign to
a long term contract? Logan Gilbert
looks like the main choice. George
Kirby could be after that although
the question is how much does he
like being a Mariner. Bryan Woo
looks to be a good choice to sign
though after Gilbert.
I guess we have had questions in the
Mariners ownership to sign free agents
to long and high contracts. This year
the Mariners traded for Brendan Donovan
who they could give a new contact before
Gilbert or Woo. We do know that the
Mariners need a third baseman though
Donovan can play multiple positions.
It does look like infield is set for the
future for a few years. Go M's.
