Wednesday night the Seattle Mariners won again along with the hitting at least one home run in a game. This time the home run came off the bat of Mitch Haniger that put the Mariners ahead in the ninth inning that led to their twelve win on the season. The home run was the only one hit in this game by the Mariners.
Roenis Elias came in the bottom of the 9th inning to record the save. It wasn't easy though he did get the first two outs easy. The Royals were able to get the bases loaded but he was able to get the batter to pop out to end the threat and have the victory. The final score was Seattle 6 Kansas City 5.
Yusei Kikuchi was able to go six innings in this game his fourth start of the season. He gave up three runs with two coming on solo home runs in the second and third innings. He walked only one batter while striking out three.
The Mariners were leading five to three when Kikuchi left the game but Matt Festa wasn't able to hold the lead giving up two runs in two/thirds of an inning. Zach Rosscup and Anthony Swarzak each pitch two/thirds of an inning as well. Swarzak was on the pitcher of record when Haniger hit his home run. It was his first win as a Mariner. Elias recorded the save his second on the season. I see Elias pitching in all different circumstances whether it is closing or coming in earlier for an inning or two.
Jay Bruce who started in left field Wednesday night in place of Santana to give him a night off had to leave the game with a sore Achilles. So Santana came in for the rest of the game. The injury isn't serious, however, I wouldn't be surprised if the Mariners give Santana the day off on Thursday since it is a day game.
Daniel Vogelbach who has been hot lately didn't get a hit in the game however he did get an RBI on a sacrifice fly. This is something the Mariners have been able to do well so far on the season.
In triple-A action in Tacoma, Shed Long hit a walk-off home run for the Rainiers to win 7-5 over Fresno. He was 4-4 for the night. He continues hitting well I wouldn't be surprised to see Long up in the first half of the season in Seattle. It is nice to know the Mariners have good depth in Tacoma in case of injuries.
