Mariners Lose Opener in Chicago

The Seattle Mariners had a rough start in the opening game in the series against the Chicago White Sox on the road losing 10-8. In part, it was defense well as pitching.

Yusei Kikuchi had a rough start in part of his own doing well as the defense which so far has struggled despite the fact the Mariners are 7-2. The White Sox scored three runs in both the first and second inning after Domingo Santana hit a home run in the first inning for his 4th of the early season.

Despite the awful start Kikuchi was able to pitch five innings. He had only one walk with four strikeouts plus giving up seven hits. Of the six runs, four of them were earned which is exactly now his ERA.

The Mariners scored a run in the third inning well as two in the fourth inning to get within two. Daniel Vogelbach playing again instead of Encarnacion hit the second home run in as many days. The Mariners were able to go ahead in the 6th inning. Ryon Healy hit a two-run homer to tie the game then Mitch Haniger hit another two-run homer to go up 8-6.

Matt Festa coming in for Kikuchi did a fine job in the sixth inning just giving up a walk without a hit or a run. In the seventh inning though Cory Gearrin for the second game in a row had a hard time getting the ball over the plate. He walked two batters well as hit one too that led to three runs scored though he didn't give up a hit. He is having to improve if he expects to stay in the Mariners bullpen. Manager Scott Servais was asked after the game if Gearrin was hurt and his reply was no.

Left-handed specialist Zach Rosscup came in for Gearrin giving up a run and a walk. It helped in Gearrin getting three runs to him. Rosscup was only able to get one out. Chasen Bradford replaced Rosscup to get the remaining two outs in the seventh well as going the full eighth inning. Bradford gave up a home run to shortstop Tim Anderson in the eighth.  Former Mariner Alex Colome was credited for the save in the game for the White Sox.

Mike Leake will pitch for the Mariners on Saturday. Oh, by the way, all three games are day games. This will be Leake's second start of the season. he beat the Red Sox in his first outing. Wade LeBlanc will start Sunday and Felix Hernandez will start on Monday in the first game against the Royals in Kansas City. Though it hasn't been announced expect Marco Gonzales will start the second game in K.C.  Go M's.
