The Seattle Mariners continued Monday night getting to the opponents' starter early on in the game scoring four runs in the first inning. Mallex Smith scored the first run when Domingo Santana hit a single. Smith had advanced to second on a single by Mitch Haniger. Haniger scored as well on a single by catcher Omar Narvaez. Santana and Narvaez both scored on a double by Tim Beckham who earlier in the day was named American League Player of the Week.
The Los Angeles Angels scored a run in the second after Albert Pujols hit a double. Pujols had two hits and scored twice in the game. The Angels had two more runs in the fourth inning. The Mariners were able to shut out the Angels the rest of the way. Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to make the final score 6-3.
Felix Hernandez got his first victory since the middle of last season. He went 5 and 1/3 innings giving up seven hits, three runs which only one was earned because of four errors. Felix didn't walk a batter a very good sign and struck out four batters. Not sure exactly when Felix will make his next start. The Mariners have two days off on Wednesday before facing the White Sox in Chicago on Thursday. The second day off is in Chicago on Friday. The earliest he would start is next Monday.
A great sign now the Mariners are now 6-1. They have a two-game lead over the Oakland A's at 4-3. The Texas Rangers are 2-2 while the Houston Astros are 2-3 and the Angels 1-4. Regardless how Tuesday night's game turns out they will go on the road in first place.
The Mariners bullpen did a fine job in 3 and 2/3 innings giving up only one hit. Veteran lefty Roenis Elias recorded his first save pitching the ninth inning. Marco Gonzales will go Tuesday night going for his third victory already in the young season. He will face Trevor Cahill who went six innings in his only start giving up four runs. The Mariners are hoping to continue the same fate as they have done to the other starters.
On Monday Jerry Dipoto made another trade picking up right-handed reliever Connor Sadzeck from the Texas Rangers for a minor league pitcher. Sadzeck likely wouldn't be added to the 25-man roster until he reports which probably when the Mariners get to Chicago. Sadzeck was out of minor league options so the reason for the trade. Other changes could happen to the bullpen as a couple pitchers are ready to come off the injured list.
