Both WSU and Gonzaga Win

Both the WSU Cougars and Gonzaga
Bulldogs won their final game of the
regular season Saturday  night.

The Cougars beat Pepperdine on
their court 90 to 83. Pepperdine
had the lead for first eight minutes
of the game before the Cougars
took control.

Dane Erikstrup had a double double
with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Ethan Price had 15 points as well.
He made 3 out of 6 from beyond the three point line.

The Cougars shot and made more
than Pepperdine in the field though
the Cougars made thirteen less
free throws. Both teams were equal
in rebounds so Cougars made
better opportunities.

Next up for the Cougars will be
the WCC conference tournament.
They are the number six seed
and have there first game this
coming Saturday. The opponent
not known yet.

Tge gsme between Gonzaga
and San Francisco was supposed
to be a tough matchup however
Gonzaga won in a land slide
95-75. They had a fifteen point
lead at halftime and extended
with ease.

A major difference the Zags made
11 of 24 in 3s while Pepperdine
made  3 of 18. Also did well inside
as forward Ben Gregg led with
23 points. Four of the starters
scored in double figures. Ryan
Nembhard had only 8 however
continued his record in assists
with 15.

The Zags finished in second
and has that seed in the WCC
tournament behind St. Mary's.
The Zags first game will be
a week from Monday. Their
opponent isn't known yet
either.

We wish the Cougars and Zags
the best in the Tournament.

Mariners Lose Saturday Bigtime

The Seattle Mariners lost Saturday
by twice as many points as the
White Sox who won 41 games last
year.

The White Sox scored 18 while the
Mariners had 9. It really that close
since Mariners score 7 in the bottom
of the ninth.

The hightlight in the 9th was a blast
by outfielder Lazaro Montes. It brought
the Mariners fans still there a big
applause. He showed what the M's
hope to see in the next couple years
as he is is only 20 and he doesn't
turn 21 until around World Series
time.

We know hits are not to important
at this time however Dylan Moore
doesn't have a hit yet. Ryan Bliss
had a double and scored a run
in the ninth.  Have no idea who
manager Wilson thinks will be
the second baseman when the
season starts. I would prefer
Moore who come off the bench
and have an occasional start.
A lot could depend who he hits
well off as well.

Tyler Locklear hitting well though
only has nine at bats though 4
hits. I would like to see him on
the team but we know there isn't
much room on the roster. There
is six starters set and second
plus first will be platooned to
some degree and Garver looks
to be the back up catcher. Take
two second and first baseman
along with Garver makes eleven.
That makes two other spots
left and one most likely go to
Mitch Haniger. It depends
whether Dylan Moore is considered
among the 11. The last spot
may go to Locklear or Rivas.
We could be surprised by another.
If Cole Young is one of the second
baseman than Ryan Bliss be the
equation  for the last spot.

Most of the runs were off
relievers who won't be on the
team. Andre Munoz made his
first appearance in a game
and gave a run. Hancock gave
up two as the starter so that
leaves 15 runs by relievers who
won't be on the team at least
starting the season.

In basketball the Washington
Huskies lost to Indiana 78-62.
The Huskies have lost four in
a row and face  USC and Oregon
this coming week. USC lost
big today to the Ducks who
have won five in a row.
The Huskies could beat USC
however to make the Big Ten
tournament they would have
to beat Oregon as well and have
some luck to get in.

Both Gonzaga and WSU play
tonight so give details later.

Bryan Woo Mskex First Start

The Seattle Mariners had an
evening game for the first
time in spring training. I was
able to see on major league
baseball app. They have the
radio broadcast so able to
hear Rick Rizz. Also former
Mariners reliever Charlie
Furbish was on the broadcast
to.

Bryan Woo made his first spring
start of spring training. He went
one and two-thirds of an inning.
Gave up no runs, hits or walks.
No strike outs either. He threw
21 pitches.  The other Luis Castillo
as I call him gave up a run in the
third inning after Samad Taylor
drove in a run. I think it was
funny that they him a blown save
in the third inning.

The Mariners only had two starters
to play in Arozarena who led off
and Cal Raleigh at dh. Cole Young
who came in for Cal at dh hit a
double to drive in  the winning run
in the seventh inning. Final was
Mariners 2 Padres 1. Certainly
different than most of the other
games.

Emerson Hancock will start
Saturday afternoon against
the Chicago White Sox in
Peoria. Most likely see some
more of the starters in this
one.

Before I forget Donovan Solano
made his first start of spring
after being late because of
visa issue. Though he will be
seen at first base a lot especially
against lefties he played at
third base. May see him in a
game at second as well.

Now that we have seen eight
games from the Mariners in
spring training we will see
more of the regulars. The minor
leaguers will likely play fifth
inning and beyond this week.
They have 21 spring games
remaining. They have an off
day this coming Tuesday.

Those still fighting for a spot
may start see more what they
can do. The bullpen basically
has one spot opened. The
second base position is the
other. Hoping that Cole Young
is able to be the starter there.
Ryan Bliss and Leo Rivas still
in there. Of course Dylan Moore
if the others aren't able to start.

Until next time Go M's
