Mariners Win Opening Game On Road Trip

The Seattle Mariners didn't have much
of am offense Friday evening in Kansas
City against the Royals.

Final Mariners 2 Royals 0

Mitch Garver was the hero for the
Mariners hitting a two run homer
in the 7th inning.  Garver hasn't
had a good season at the plate
but does not better on the road.
This was Garver's second home
run on the season. Both happened
in the last seven games. His batting
average is .177. Before Cal Raleigh
went on the injured list he was
hitting.260 on the road.  He hasn't
played a lot of games though fewer
when Cal was playing. He was playing
about once a week so not easy to
hit playing only so often.

He actually done well walking. He has
15 walks while only 11 hits. Garver
has struck out 24 times. His on base
percentage is .333 so he knows how
important to walk and let others drive
him home.  He has scored ten runs
which is good.

Not sure when Cal Raleigh will return
though he should be eligible to come
off the injured list soon.

The Mariners faced a lefty which the
team has had trouble with all season.
The Mariners Mariners use a platooning
system in right field and designated
hitter.  The right handed bats haven't
done well so far this season.

Victor Robles came off the injured list
and played several games at Tacoma
on rehab assignment.  He played right
field having two at bats without a hit.
Late in the game Luke Raley pinch hit
without a hit.

Rob Refsynder who the Mariners signed
as a  free agent during the off season
to face lefties struck all three times.
Dominic Canzone pinch hit late in
the game for him. So right field and
designated hitter they were zero for
seven.

The Mariners rested first baseman
Josh Naylor as well. I didn't really
understand this move when it was
the first game of the series and
road trip. Fortunately the pitching
along with Garver's home run gave
them the win. Patrick Wisdom who
recently activated from the injured
list played first base without a hit
either.

Logan Gilbert started and pitched
five and two thirds innings giving
up two hits while walking two and
striking out six. Much better than
his last outing where he gave up
seven runs in a Mariners loss.

Eduardo Bazardo came in with
runners on base and got the
last out with the grounder to
Colt Emerson who stepped on
third base.  He came back to
to pitch the 7th striking out
three batters.

Matt Brash pitched the 8th inning
which is often his custom. He
did have a little trouble giving up
two hits however got out of it.
Andre Munoz came in and took
care of the Royals.

Saturday afternoon George Kirby
will pitch for the Mariners. He
has had a good season overall.
He has a 5-3 record with an era
of 3. 45. In recent outings last
Sunday was his toughest giving
up six runs against the San Diego
Padres. He and Gilbert's outings.
was a major reason they were
swept at home to the Padres.

After this series the Mariners
go to Sacramento to take on
the A's.  The Mariners are two
games behind the A's right now.
If the Mariners can win this
series as well as against the
A's they could be in first place.

The Rangers are a half inning
ahead of the Mariners however
they are losing to the Angels
do stays that way them and the
Mariners are tied.  The Rangers
play the Astros four games this
coming Monday thru Thursday
at home. A good scenario would
be the two teams would split
the series.

Next weekend the Mariners be
back home to play the Arizona
Diamondbacks to finish the month
of May.  The Mariners start the
month of June playing three
games against the New York
Mets who have been struggling
so far this season. The Mariners
then will go on another road
trip. Go M's.
