men's basketball team Monday
night beat Loyola Marymount
at home 73-59 to begin the West
Coast Conference season by
winning the first two games.
I expected they would however
they still have too.
The game was close in the first
half with each team going back
and forth with the lead. The
Cougars defense did the job in
the second half where Loyola
had only 25 points. This is where
the Cougars have to succeed to
continue on winning in the WCC
since it is a tough conference.
Nate Calmese led the Cougars
once again with 20 points.
Freshman Tomas Thrastarson
had 17 points with 11 in the
first half to keep it close. Tomas
made four out of five on 3 point
shots as well. Dane Erikstrup
rounded out the double figures
with 14 points. He made three
3 point shots.
LeJuan Watts led with 11 rebounds
and 8 assists along with eight points.
Ethan Price who had eight points
as well was second in rebounds
with nine. The starting five played
most of the minutes in.this one.
The benchhad a total of 39 minutes
and six points.
The Cougars next game will be at
home again this time against the
San Francisco Dons on Saturday
in a late afternoon game. The Dons
have the same identical record as
the Cougars with 2-0 in conference
and 12-3 overall. This will be a tough
game for the Cougars.
Gonzaga played Monday night with
a tale of two half's. The Zags won
over Peppertine 89-82. The Zags
went out strong in the first half
scoring 50 points while Pepperdine
had 32 points. The second half
was reversed with Pepperdine
having 50 points while the Zags
had 39 turning out to be the difference
in the game.
The Zags were led by Khalif Battle
with 21 points followed by Braden
Huff off the bench with 19. Talk about
instant offense. Graham Ike had
16 points while leading with nine
rebounds. Ben Gregg pinched in
double figures off the bench with
12.
The Zags shot well from the field
however not behind the 3 point
line making 2 of 15. The Zags next
game will be home on Thursday
against Portland who are 0-2 in
conference play. The following
game will be Saturday against
LMU on the road. These are the
two have lost to the Cougars.
The Zags should win however
they do play the games.
