Seattle Mariners September Stretch Run

The Seattle Mariners have 23 games remaining in
the season in a shortened season of 60 games. The
Mariners are currently in third place in the American
League West. They have a record of 15-22 in a
season of rebuilding.

The Mariners ended August by sweeping the
Texas Rangers who they will play this weekend
in a four game series starting Friday night.
They followed by taking two out of three from
the San Diego Padres and split with the LA
Angels in a four game series.

This will be their first play in September after
the series against the Oakland A's was cancelled.
The series will be made up in two doubleheaders
one in Seattle and the other in Oakland.

Catcher Austin Nola who had good play at the
end of August along with relievers Austin Adams
and Dan Altavilla were traded for four prospects
on August 31 at the end of the trading deadline to
the San Diego Padres. In a separate trade they
sent closer Taylor Williams to the Padres as well
for a player named later.

So you see the Mariners will have some new faces
on the ballclub beginning on Friday. Ty France an
infielder acquired in the Nola trade will be on hand
along with Luis Torrens. Both players were on the
Padres active roster. France will see action at dh,
along with an occasion at third base, second and
first. Luis Torrens will see at action at catcher.
He was the backup catcher with the Padres. He
will see a lot of action to in September. This will
be a preview for next season.

The Seattle Mariners reactivate Kendall Graveman
off the injured list. He started the season as the
Mariners number four starter however only started
in two games before coming up with neck spasms.
Instead of being added back to the starting rotation
Graveman will be coming out of the bullpen. What
role will he play be determined. Might be used in
long relief depending on how many innings he can
pitch. Since the Mariners are short staffed when it
comes to the setup and closer spots we could see
him come late in games too.

The Mariners signed Seth Frankoff as a minor league
free agent early in August. He went to spring training
with the Padres before being sent down to the minors
but decided to take the free agency route. He spent
the last two years pitching in Korea. Frankoff was
a member of the Mariners farm system before that.

Seth Frankoff will be part of the Mariners bullpen.
Joey Gerber who was drafted in 2018 could become
the Mariner closer or share the spot with veteran
Japanese pitcher Yoshihisa Hirano who recently
was activated on the roster. He has a little experience
being a closer though has been setup reliever for the
most part.

The Mariners activated reliever Walker Lockett after
claiming being claimed off of waivers from the New
York Mets. Interesting he was drafted by the San Diego
Padres. The Mariners claimed outfielder Phillip Ervin
off of waivers on Thursday from the Cincinnati Reds.
He was a former first round pick by the Reds in 2013.
This was his fourth season with the Reds. Like Dan
Vogelbach he wasn't having a good year hitting batting
at .086. He has shown hitting well at the major league
level. I expect the Mariners will activate Ervin.

The Mariners currently have 15 pitchers on the roster
including nine relievers so I expect one of them will
be sent down to alternate training site or released.
The only true outfielders right now on the active roster
are Jake Fraley and Kyle Lewis.

The top prospect the Mariners acquired in the San Diego
Padre trade Taylor Trammell is working out at the
alternate site. As you see now we get meet several new
players. It is what happens when you are  rebuilding.
We will see who will be around next season.
