player added to the roster through
the transfer portal. This player wss
on the team's roster in Mike Hopkins
last season as a true freshmen. Trouble he never got any playing
time because of injuries. Last season
as a redshirt freshman he transfered
to USC Trojans where he had very
good success though the team didn't
so much.
The players name is Wesley Yates lll.
He got serious attention from Kentucky
and Texas. Turning down a top notch
program like Kentucky and being from
Texas couldn't have been easy. Some
guys though want to go a distance
for college and play basketball. Yates
is now the fifth player who is coming
to Seattle. He averaged 14.1 points
a game and shot over 43% in 3 point
shots something the Huskies could
use.
Yates is listed at small forward though
more likely be a big guard. He will be
teamed with Zoom Diallo who returns
for his sophomore season. These
two could be a tough guys to match
up. Diallo didn't shoot many threes
last year however will have to look
to increase if he wants to play at the
higher level. Combined these two
could score 30 plus points a game.
At point guard is newcomer Quaimari
Peterson a conference player this
last season. Coming in as a senior
he hss the experience to get the
ball to Yates and Diallo. This doesn't
count the inside guys the Huskies
have improve as well.
Playing in the Big Ten the Huskies
need to be more physical which
looks like it will happen. Playing
better defense is a must.
The first year under head coach
Danny Sprinkle they had Great Osobor
as their primary offensive player.
Though they had a few other guys
the Big Ten schools knew was to
play good defense against Osobor.
A senior it was his only season as
a Husky. Next season the other Big
Ten teams will have to try to stop
most of the Huskies starters.
So far Gonzaga hasn't named any
players coming as transfers. They
have show interest in at least five
players. Losing four seniors and a
couple transfers they need at least five.
On Wednesday the Washington State
Cougars lost Cedric Coward to the
transfer portal. A shooting guard
Coward missed most of the season
with injuries. He transfered last year
to the Cougars from Eastern Washington where current coach
David Riley had coached previously.
None of the other four Cougar players
in the transfer have signed elsewhere
yet. Who they are going after isn't
mentioned either. We will let you know
where the transfers end up going
as well those coming in.
The Cougars do have eight players
returning however no incoming
freshmen mentioned as of yet.
Tomas Thrastarson who played
a lot when Isaiah Watts was out.and started. Named to West Coast
Conference all-freshman team.
Forward Rihards Vavers played
in only 16 games and late in
season his minutes increased.
He averaged 1.6 points a game.
He is capable of more and could
be a starter or playing capable
minutes off the bench.
Forward DK Okafor a sophomore
last season came over from
California Berkeley. He played
in 32 games averaging 13.8
minutes coming off the bench.
He could be a starter or contribute
more time off the bench. Okafor
averaged 5.6 points a game and
2.7 rebounds.
These are three contributors
to.last season team. Cougars
will decline if they don't find
anyone or a few. We see what
happens.
One thing we want Gonzaga,
Washington, and Washington
State all be thrifying and
making it to the NCAA tournament.
Gonzaga is only consistent
team to make it into the
tournament. We hope the
Huskies, and Cougars make
it more often than they has been.
