Munoz from the San Diego Padres
in August 2020 that brought Ty France
along with two other players who
saw action with the Mariners too.
Now Munoz is the remaining member
of the Mariners.
Munoz may have pitched for the
Mariners in 2021 however he was
recovering from injury. In 2022 and
2023 Munoz was the setup for Paul
Sewald until he was traded to the
Arizona Diamondbacks at the trading
deadline. Most likely Sewald wouldn't
have been traded if Munoz wasn't
ready to be the closer.
Though Munoz is the closer we
can see him come in from the
seventh inning on. He primarily
pitches against the opposing
team's middle of the order
depending on the score. Last
year he was limited and given
rest for being hurt. The Mariners
are hoping that Gregory Santos
who was out most of last season
and Matt Brash to will give the
Mariners two other guys who can
close games out.
We most likely would see Matt
Brash until sometime in April.
He is in spring training and will
be evaluated so we will have
news on him when we know.
Last September Collins Snider
and Troy Taylor became the
Mariners could count on in
high leverage situations. Taylor
who wasn't in camp last year
with the Mariners was brought
up from Double-A on August 10.
He ended up pitching in 21 games.
He ended up with an era of 3.72
and had 25 strike outs.
Taylor was hurt when training camp
was opened however now is able
to throw so that is good news. Santos
was throwing in Arizona before camp
started so that is good news. When
Munoz has to have a day off Santos
will likely be the one be called upon.
Last year when Munoz was rested
the Mariners didn't have much
success in that area.
Taylor and Snider will likely take
the bulk of pitching in the 7th
inning until Brash returns that is.
Brash who was good when coming
in with runners on base. I expect
the role maybe the same. We hope
that Munoz won't have to do the
same very often.
Early on though we can see the
relievers in the sixth inning as
they build up their pitch count.
The Mariners starter can find
going seven innings often especially
Logan and Kirby. We now hope
that Bryce Miller and Bryan Woo
can pitch longer in games. Seeing
Woo go at least six innings would
be nice. Last year was taxing on
the bullpen since often he could
only go five innings or less.
Next up on the Mariners we will
look at catcher Cal Raleigh. Go M'S.
